本質的なデバイスの造作が図1a−1bに示されており、また上記関連特許出願及び特許においてより詳しく議論されている。クロスワイヤスイッチ10は、それぞれが0°ではないある角度で交差している2本のワイヤ12、14(各々、金属ワイヤあるいは半導体ワイヤのどちらかである)からなる。それらのワイヤの間には、図1a及び1bにおいてRで示されている分子あるいは分子化合物の層がある。2本のワイヤ12、14の交差位置で挟まれている特定の分子18(Rsで表示)は、スイッチ分子として取り扱われ、また、本明細書ではその代替用語として接合部とも呼んでいる。そのワイヤの両端に適切な電圧が印加されると、スイッチ分子は、酸化されるかもしくは還元される。分子が酸化(還元)されると、電荷の均衡を保つために、第二の種が還元(酸化)される。従って、これらの2つの種は、レドックス(酸化還元)対と呼ばれる。このデバイスの一例では、1つの分子が還元され、次に第二の分子(レドックス対のもう片方)が酸化される。別の例では、ある分子が還元され、ワイヤの1本が酸化される。第三の例では、ある分子が酸化され、ワイヤの1つが還元される。第四の例では、1本のワイヤが酸化され、もう一方のワイヤと関連付けられている酸化物が還元される。全ての場合において、酸化と還元は、2本のワイヤ間のトンネル距離又はトンネル障壁高さに影響を及ぼし、それによって、ワイヤ接合部を横切る電荷搬送率を指数関数的に変化させ、スイッチの基礎として役立っている。

本発明は、従来の技術とは一線を画するいくつかの新しい種類のスイッチングメカニズムを導入している。
図2は、分子配座の変化を介する電界誘導バンドギャップ変化(回転子/固定子方式のモデル)を伴う本モデルの概略図である。図2に示すように、当該分子30は、回転子部分32と固定子部分34からなる。回転子部分32は、印加電界によって回転する。図の左側に示しているある状態では、分子全体にわたって拡張共役が存在し、その結果バンドギャップが比較的小さくなる。図の右側に示した回転子が回転している他の状態では、拡張共役が破壊されて、その結果バンドギャップが比較的大きくなる。
上記分子(例1)は、分子30全体の方位、即ち電流が流れる軸、に垂直な内部回転子32を用いて設計されている。この場合、外部場は、図示するように、分子30の方位軸に沿って適用され、電極(垂直点線)は、紙面に垂直且つ分子30の方位軸に垂直に配置される。双方向矢印によって示すように、図面の左から右に配向された電界の印加によって、上側の図面に描かれたような回転子32を下側右の図面に示す位置まで回転させることができ、またその逆も可能である。この場合、下側右の図面に描かれたような回転子32は、分子の他の部分と同一面上になく、そのため、これは分子のOFF状態、即ち低導電状態であり、それに対して上側の図面では、回転子は分子の他の部分と同一面上にあり、そのため、これは分子のON状態、即ち高導電状態である。下側左の図面に示した構造は、上側図面(同一面上、共役型)及び下側右の図面(中央部分回転型、非共役型)の間の回転の移行の様子を表している。
上記分子(例2)は、分子全体の方位軸に平行な内部回転子を用いて設計されている。この場合、外部場は、分子軸に垂直に適用され、電極は分子の長軸に平行に配置され、上記のモデル構造の面に垂直か又は平行とすることができる。例えば、電界線が分子軸に垂直で且つ上方を指している電界を上記上側分子へ印加することによって、上図に描かれている回転子は、上記下側分子図面に示すように、ほぼ90°回転し、エッジが現出する。この逆も可能である。この場合、下側図面に描かれたような回転子は分子の他の部分と同一面上になく、そのため、これは分子のOFF状態、即ち低導電状態であり、それに対して上側図面では、回転子が分子の他の部分と同一面上にあり、そのため、これは分子のON状態、即ち高導電状態である。同図面において、文字A、D、E、G、及びJは、分子の幾何構造を調節するのに種々の化学ユニットを利用でき、且つ他の化学特性基も回転子及び固定子として使用することができる部位を表している(文字N、H、及びOは、それらの通常の意味を保持している)。文字A、D、E、G、及びJは、次のいずれとすることもできる。ヘテロ原子(例えば、N、O、S、P等)、炭化水素(飽和又は不飽和のもののいずれか)、あるいは上記のヘテロ原子の少なくとも1つを有する炭化水素。前出のものに加えて、文字G及びJは、次のヘテロ原子のいずれとすることもできる。水素、F、Cl、Br、I等。
図3aは、本モデルの概略図であり、それはバンド局在化の増減を伴う電荷の分離あるいは再結合を介した拡張共役の変化によって引き起こされる電界誘導性バンドギャップ変化を伴うものである。図3aに示すように、分子130は、2つの部分132及び134からなる。分子130は、π非局在化が少なく、比較的大きいバンドギャップを示す。電界の印加によって、分子130内での電荷の分離が起こり、π非局在化が十分となり、バンドギャップがより小さい状態になる。電荷の再結合によって、分子130はその最初の状態に戻る。
図3bは、本モデルの概略図であり、それは電荷の分離あるいは再結合及びπ結合の破壊あるいは形成を介した拡張共役の変化によって引き起こされる電界誘導性バンドギャップの変化を伴う。図3bに示すように、分子130’は、2つの部分132’及び134’からなる。分子130’は、比較的小さいバンドギャップを示す。電界の印加によって、分子130’内のπ結合の破壊が起こり、バンドギャップがより大きい状態になる。電界を反転させることで、2つの部分132’及び134’の間にπ結合が再結合され、分子130’がその最初の状態に戻る。
図4は、本モデルの概略図であり、それは、分子の折畳みあるいは引伸ばしを介する拡張共役の変化によって引き起こされる電界誘導性バンドギャップの変化を伴うものである。図4に示すように、分子230は、3つの部分232、234、及び236からなる。分子230は、分子全体にわたる拡張共役のため比較的小さいバンドギャップを示す。電界の印加によって、中央部分234の辺りでの分子の折畳みに起因して、分子230における共役の破壊が起こり、分子全体における非拡張共役のため、バンドギャップがより大きい状態になる。電界の反転によって分子230は展開し、分子230はその最初の状態に戻る。分子230の中央部分234の引伸ばしと弛緩は、同じ効果を有する。
Claims (20)
- (1)分子配座の変化又は異性化
(2)バンドギャップを変化させる化学結合変化を介した拡張共役の変化
あるいは、
(3)分子の折畳み、あるいは引伸ばし
のうちの1つのメカニズムによって、電界誘導バンドギャップ変化が起こる分子システムからなる電界で駆動される分子スイッチ。 - 前記電界誘導バンドギャップ変化が、分子配座の変化又は異性化を介して生じる請求項1に記載の分子スイッチ。
- 前記分子システムが、少なくとも1つの固定子部分と少なくとも1つの回転子部分からなり、前記回転子が印加電界によって第一の状態から第二の状態に回転し、前記第一の状態においては、前記分子システムの全体にわたって拡張共役が存在し、その結果バンドギャップが比較的小さくなり、且つ前記第二の状態においては、前記拡張共役が破壊され、その結果バンドギャップが比較的大きくなる請求項2に記載の分子スイッチ。
- 前記分子システムが、
(式中の垂直の点線は、前記分子が電気的に接続されている電極を表す)からなる請求項3に記載の分子スイッチ。 - 前記分子システムが、
(式中の文字A、D、E、G、及びJは、前記分子システムの幾何構造及び光学的諸性質を調節するのに種々の化学ユニットを利用することができる部位を示し、一般に以下を示す。A、D、E、G、及びJは、ヘテロ原子、炭化水素(飽和又は不飽和のもののいずれか)、及び前記ヘテロ原子の少なくとも1つを有する炭化水素から成る群から独立して選択され、且つ、前記に加えて、文字G及びJは、水素、F、Cl、Br、及びIから成る群から独立して選択される)からなる請求項3に記載の分子スイッチ。 - 前記電界誘導バンドギャップが、バンドギャップを変化させる化学結合変化を介した拡張共役の変化によって生じる請求項1に記載の分子スイッチ。
- 前記電界誘導バンドギャップ変化が、バンド局在化の増減を伴う電荷の分離あるいは再結合を介した拡張共役の変化によって生じる請求項6に記載の分子スイッチ。
- 前記分子システムが2つの部分からなり、第一の状態から第二の状態への変化が印加された電界によって起こり、前記変化が前記第一の状態から前記第二の状態へ変化するときに電荷の分離を伴い、それによってπ非局在化が少ない比較的バンドギャップの大きい状態となり、且つ前記第二の状態から前記第一の状態へ変化するときに電荷の再結合を伴い、それによってπ非局在化が比較的大きい比較的バンドギャップが小さい状態になる請求項7に記載の分子スイッチ。
- 前記分子システムが、
からなる請求項8に記載の分子スイッチ。 - 前記分子システが、
(式中のM+は、遷移金属を含む金属、又はそれらのハロゲン錯体、H+、他の種類のルイス酸(単数又は複数)を表わす)からなる請求項8に記載の分子スイッチ。 - 前記電界誘導バンドギャップが、電荷の分離あるいは再結合及びπ結合の破壊あるいは形成を介する拡張共役の変化によって生じる請求項6に記載の分子スイッチ。
- 前記分子システムが2つの部分からなり、第一の状態から第二の状態への変化が印加された電界によって起こり、前記変化が前記第一の状態から前記第二の状態へ変化するときに電荷の分離を伴い、前記第一の状態においては前記分子システムの全体にわたって拡張共役が存在し、その結果バンドギャップが比較的大きくなり、且つ前記第二の状態においては前記拡張共役が破壊され且つ分離された正負の電荷が前記分子システム内に生じ、その結果比較的バンドギャップが小さくなる請求項11に記載の分子スイッチ。
- 前記分子システムが、

(式中の文字A、B、W、X、Y、及びZは、水素、ヘテロ原子、前記へテロ原子の少なくとも1つを含む官能基、炭化水素(飽和又は不飽和のもののいずれか)、及び前記ヘテロ原子の少なくとも1つを有する炭化水素から成る群から独立して選択され、且つ前記垂直の点線は、前記分子システムが電気的に接続される電極を表わす)からなる請求項12に記載の分子スイッチ。 - 前記電界誘導バンドギャップ変化が、分子の折畳みあるいは引伸ばしによって生じる請求項1に記載の分子スイッチ。
- 前記分子システムが3つの部分からなり、第一の部分と第三の部分の各々が、第二の中央部分と結合しており、第一の状態から第二の状態への変化が印加された電界によって起こり、前記変化が前記第二の部分の辺りのあるいは前記第二の部分の折畳みあるいは引伸ばしを伴い、前記第一の状態においては前記分子システムの全体にわたって拡張共役が存在し、その結果バンドギャップが比較的小さくなり、且つ前記第二の状態においては前記拡張共役が破壊され、その結果バンドギャップが比較的大きくなる請求項15に記載の分子スイッチ。
- 前記分子システムが、
(式中のR1及びR2は、水素、ヘテロ原子、前記へテロ原子の少なくとも1つを含む官能基、炭化水素(飽和又は不飽和のもののいずれか)、及び前記ヘテロ原子の少なくとも1つを有する炭化水素から成る群から独立して選択される)からなる請求項16に記載の分子スイッチ。 - 1つのワイヤが他と0°以外の角度で交差する接合部を形成する一対の交差したワイヤと、前記接合部において前記一対の交差したワイヤを接続させる少なくとも1つのコネクタ種とを含むクロスワイヤデバイスからなる分子スイッチであって、前記接合部がナノメートル単位の機能寸法を有し、前記少なくとも1つのコネクタ種が前記分子システムからなる請求項1に記載の分子スイッチ。
- 前記クロスワイヤデバイスが、記憶装置、論理装置、マルチプレクサ、デマルチプレクサ、集積回路に適合性のあるインターコネクト機器、電界プログラマブルゲートアレイ(FPGA)、クロスバースイッチ、及び通信デバイスから成る群から選択されている請求項18に記載の分子スイッチ。
- 前記分子システムが、一対の電極の間に挟まれており、且つ連結部によってそこに接続されている請求項1に記載の分子スイッチ。
