Abstract
Description
【0001】

[Industrial applications]
The present invention relates to a driving device that drives a display including an EL (electroluminescence) element based on a video signal.

Organic EL displays using organic EL elements can be broadly classified into passive matrix drive types and active matrix drive types, like LCDs. The passive drive type has a simple matrix configuration in which a portion where an anode and a cathode cross can emit light, and is turned on only when a vertical line is selected. On the other hand, the active drive type is configured by arranging a switching

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
If, for example, an image of a white lattice pattern is continuously displayed on a black background on the organic EL display driven as described above, the temperature does not rise because the organic EL element displaying black has not received any energy. The organic EL element displaying white always receives energy, and a part of the received energy becomes heat, so that the temperature continues to rise and the brightness decreases. Although there is no discomfort in terms of the image as it is, if an attempt is made to display, for example, a one-sided gray image after this image, the luminance of the organic EL element whose temperature has increased is lower than that of the organic EL element whose temperature has not increased. The black lattice pattern looks thin on a white background.
[0007]
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and provides an EL display driving device capable of suppressing a temperature rise of EL elements to reduce temperature unevenness between EL elements, thereby reducing screen brightness unevenness of a display including EL elements. The purpose is to provide.
[0008]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, a driving apparatus for an EL display according to the present invention is a driving apparatus for driving a display comprising EL elements based on a video signal. Means for causing the element to form a non-light emitting state; and correcting means for performing luminance correction of the video signal such that an EL element having a shorter video display time for forming the non-light emitting state has a higher input image luminance. It is characterized by having.
[0009]
With the above configuration, a non-light emitting state is formed in all the EL elements using the vertical blanking period, so that a cooling period is given to all the EL elements, and the temperature rise of the EL elements is suppressed, The unevenness in temperature between the EL elements is reduced, and the unevenness in screen luminance of the display is reduced. The change in the display luminance between the display areas on the display due to the difference in the image display time of each EL element by forming the non-light emitting state is eliminated by the correction means.
[0010]
The correction means may include an A / D conversion circuit that converts the video signal into a digital video, and a computing unit that performs an arithmetic process for performing luminance correction on the digital video.
[0011]
The correction means may include a variable gain amplifier that receives the video signal, amplifies the gain at an arbitrary gain, and outputs the amplified gain. The variable gain amplifier changes the gain based on a vertical synchronization signal of the video signal. It may be configured.

【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, the non-light emitting state is formed in all the EL elements by using the vertical blanking period, so that the cooling period is given to all the EL elements, This has the effect of suppressing temperature rise, reducing temperature unevenness between EL elements, and reducing screen brightness unevenness of the display.
