Description
【0001】
J. Appl.
J. Appl.

BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Terms used in the present invention are defined as follows. Alkyl, alkenyl, alkylene and alkenylene may each be a linear group or a branched group. “Any” used in the present invention indicates that not only the position but also the number can be arbitrarily selected. And a plurality of hydrogens or -CH 2 When-is replaced, each may be replaced by a different group. For example, two -CH in alkyl 2 When-is replaced by -O- and -CH = CH-, it will represent an alkoxyalkenyl or alkenyloxyalkyl. In this case, any of the alkoxy, alkenylene, alkenyl and alkylene groups may be a linear group or a branched group. However, any -CH 2 When-is replaced by -O-, a plurality of consecutive -CH 2 -Is not simultaneously replaced by -O-. Both cycloalkyl and cycloalkenyl may or may not be groups with a bridged ring structure. In the following description, the compound represented by the formula (1) may be referred to as a compound (1). Similar simplification methods may be used for compounds represented by other formulas.

Writing can be performed using a phenomenon of orientation in a direction (homeotropic orientation). Writing can be performed by an electric field generated by light irradiation through an organic or inorganic photoconductive layer. This method is described in the 2000 Annual Meeting of the Printing, Information Recording, and Display Study Group, Lecture Abstracts (Feb. 22-23, 2001), pp. 41-44. When the composite material contains a photochromic compound or a photoconductive sensitizer, writing can be performed by irradiating light. A mixture of the compound (A) (0.29 g) and 4-pentyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl (1.41 g) (hereinafter represented by the symbol 5CB) (weight ratio 17:83) was added to the mixture. On the other hand, benzoyl peroxide (0.009 g) was added, and the mixture was stirred at 150 ° C. for 3 hours. The obtained reaction mixture is designated as composite material B. GPC analysis was performed on the residue from which 5CB was removed from Composite Material B, and as a result, it was found that
The composite material D was set under heating in a cell with ITO (cell thickness: 7 μm) manufactured by EC Corporation. A polarizing plate was attached to the cell in a crossed Nicols arrangement, and the transmittance corresponding to the applied voltage was measured. The results are shown in FIG. In FIG. 1, a transmittance of 100% is a transmittance immediately after injection and when no voltage is applied, and a transmittance of 0% is a transmittance in a state where light from a light source is blocked. From FIG. 1, it was found that the saturation voltage of the composite material D was 5 V or less, and the state of low transmittance was maintained even after the removal of the electric field. This means that the homeotropic alignment is maintained even after the removal of the electric field. The homeotropic alignment site recorded by the electric field was returned to the initial state where no electric field was applied by heating. From the above results, it was confirmed that the composite material D had a remarkably low write voltage and memory property.

During that time, 10 μl of Speyer catalyst was added every 10 hours. The solvent was distilled off from the reaction mixture under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (developing solvent: toluene). The obtained purified product was reprecipitated using methanol and dried to obtain the desired compound (F) (4.5 g).
Ph in these formulas is phenyl. The results of NMR analysis of compound (F) are shown below.
1 H NMR (CDCl 3 )
7.82-7.39 (m, 70H) (hydrogen atom on benzene ring), 0.82-0.70 (m, 8H) (hydrogen atom of methylene group), 0.14-0.02 (m , 24H) (hydrogen atom of methyl group)
[0040]
Example 3
5CB (1.47 g), compound (C) (0.022 g) and compound (F) (0.077 g) obtained in Example 2 were mixed and stirred at 130 ° C. for 3 hours. The obtained mixture is referred to as a composite material G. The composite material G was set under heating in the same cell with ITO used in Example 1. A polarizing plate was attached to this cell in a crossed Nicols arrangement, and the transmittance was measured in the same manner as in Example 1 to obtain a voltage-transmittance curve (FIG. 2). From FIG. 2, it was found that the saturation voltage of the composite material G was 5 V or less, and the state of low transmittance was maintained even after the removal of the electric field. This means that the homeotropic alignment is maintained even after the removal of the electric field. The homeotropic alignment site recorded by the electric field was returned to the initial state where no electric field was applied by heating. From the above results, it was confirmed that the composite material G had a remarkably low write voltage and memory property.
[0041]
Example 4
To the composite material D obtained in Example 1, 1.7% by weight of a dichroic dye (G-239 manufactured by Hayashibara Biochemical Laboratory) was added. The obtained mixture is referred to as a composite material H. The composite material H was set under heating in the same cell with ITO used in Example 1. The transmittance of the cell in visible light was measured before voltage application (initial state), at voltage application (5 V, 7.5 V and 10 V), and after voltage removal. FIG. 3 shows the obtained wavelength-transmittance curve. The transmittance in the initial state is shown by a curve of 0 V (int.), And the transmittance was increased by voltage application. The transmittance curves when applying voltages of 5 V, 7.5 V and 10 V and the transmittance curves after removing the electric field (0 V) almost completely overlapped. From this result, it was found that the saturation voltage of the composite material D was 5 V or less, and no change was observed in the transmittance curve even after the removal of the electric field. The fact that no change is observed in the transmittance curve even after the removal of the electric field means that the homeotropic alignment state due to the application of the voltage is recorded. Then, the transmittance curve returned to the initial state in which no electric field was applied by heating. From the above results, it was confirmed that the composite material H had extremely low write voltage and memory properties.
