このような機能を有する燃料電池用電極としては、固体高分子電解質である陽イオン交換樹脂とカーボン粒子と触媒金属とを含む固体高分子電解質−触媒複合電極がある。例えば、固体高分子電解質であるである陽イオン交換樹脂とカーボン粒子と酸素の還元反応および水素の酸化反応に対して高い触媒活性を示す触媒金属とを含む陽イオン交換樹脂−触媒複合電極の構造の例を図2に示す。図2において、6は触媒金属が担持されたカーボン粒子、7は陽イオン交換樹脂、8はイオン交換膜、9は細孔である。
