関する。 【解決手段】 本発明は、本出願人の熱的に調節可能な
ファイバ格子デバイスの性能は、これを熱を隔離する管
内に配置(パッケージ化)することで改善することがで
きるという発見に依拠する。この管の大きさ(直径)

ing Devices With Adjustable Chirp(調節可能なチャ
ープを備えた光格子デバイス)”なる名称の合衆国特許
出願第S.N.09/183,048号の一部係属出願であるために、
この特許出願についても参照されたい。
光ファイバ格子デバイス(optical fibergratingdevice
s)に関し、より詳細には、性能の改善を図るためにパ
ッケージ化された熱的に調節可能な光ファイバ格子デバ
イスに関する。

から成る。最も単純な形態においては、光ファイバは、

度なシリカから形成され、これに、微量濃度のドーパン
トが屈折率を制御する目的で加えられる。

的には、材料の本体と複数の実質的に等間隔に配置され

ン)、スリット、溝などから構成される。

率を乗じた数値の2倍の波長の光、すなわち、λ=2n
effΛを選択的に反射する。ここで、λは、真空中での
波長を表し、neffは、伝搬モードの有効屈折率を表
す。このタイプのブラッグ格子は、フィルタリング、信
号チャネルの追加および脱落、半導体レーザの安定化、
ファイバ増幅器励振エネルギーの反射、導波路分散の補
償などを含む様々な用途に有効に用いられている。

のレンジとされ、摂動の幅は、1/5〜4/5Λ’のレ
ンジとされる。幾つかの用途、例えば、チャープド格子
においては、間隔Λ’は、格子の長さに沿って変化を付
けられる。長周期格子は、特に、光通信システムの様々
な異なる波長において増幅器の利得を等化するのに有効
であ。これに関しては、例えば、1995年7月4日付けで、
A.M.Vengsarkarに交付された合衆国特許第5,430,817号
を参照されたい。

用途においては、理想に近い格子性能が要求される。例
えば、熱的に調節可能な格子が分散を補償するために用
られる場合、どうしても線形的な応答が要求される。た
だし、従来の熱的に調節可能な格子では、加熱が十分に
安定かつ一様でなく、厳密さを要求する用途に対して
は、性能が不十分である。従って、熱的に調節可能な格
子の性能を改善する必要性が存在する。

熱を隔離する管内に配置(パッケージ化)することで改
善することができるという発見に依拠する。この管の大
きさ(直径)は、ファイバが格子と接触するのを回避す
るのに十分に大きいが、ただし、格子を空気の流れから
実質的に隔離するのに十分に小さくされる。一つの好ま
しい実施例においては、管は、両端に弾性(ゴム製)の
シールを備えた円筒状のチューブ(管)とされる。さら
に、この弾性のシールに毛細管を通すことで、ファイバ
を管に通すための開口が確保される。

かの実施例を考察することでより一層明確になるもので
ある。これら図面は本発明の概念を図解することを目的
とし、グラフを除いて、要素の寸法は正確な縮尺を表す
ものではないことに注意する。

に、熱的に調節可能な格子11を備えたファイバ10
が、管12、例えば、円筒の管、の内部に熱が隔絶され
るように配置される。管12の直径は、管12とファイ
バ12との間に適当なすき間が生じ、管12が格子と接
触するのを回避するのに十分に大きいが、ただし、格子
11近傍の空気の大きな流れが発生するのを回避するの
に十分に小さくされる。管12の内径は、典型的には、
5cmとされ、好ましくは、1cmあるいはそれ以下と
される。好ましくは、管12は、両端を弾性(ゴム製)
のストッパ13、14によって密封される。より良好な
結果を得るために、管12に熱反射性のコーティングを
施すことも考えられる。

タベーション)12から成る。格子11は、電気的に制
御可能な熱トランジューサ23(発熱体もしくは熱を能
動的に除去する手段)と熱的に接触するように配置され
る。熱トランジューサ23は、典型的には、ファイバ上
に設けられた抵抗性フィルムなどの発熱体から構成す
る。熱トランジューサ23の抵抗は、格子12が一様に
加熱されるように格子11に沿って一様とすることも、
別の方法として、格子11に沿って局所的に変化させる
ことで格子11の様々の領域の加熱を変化させ、これに
よって、格子帯域幅の調節を行なうこともできる。ペア
の電極24、25が電源26からのワイヤ17、18と
の接触のために用いられる。以下では、本発明の一層の
理解を期すために、本発明の具体例について説明する。

学的効果のために、ブラッグ共振のピークがシフトす
る。

い従来から報告されている格子と比較して著しく優れ
る。

に調節可能な格子の反射スペクトルを比較して示す(両
者とも2.5Vの印加電圧にて動作)。図からわかるよ
うに、パッケージを備えた格子は、パッケージを備えな
い格子と比べて、より一層理想に近い特性を示し、この
ことは波長の長い方の端で特に顕著となる。

流は、ファイバデバイスと接触する媒体、典型的には、
空気、の移動によって起こる。対流による熱の輸送を最
小に押さえることが以下の幾つかの理由から望まれる。
第一に、対流は、熱の輸送を著しく増加させる。第二
に、対流は、デバイス性能の時間的な変動を著しく増加
させる。例えば、ファイバデバイスの周囲を流れる空気
の速度が変化すると、ファイバからの熱の除去(輸送)
の速度も変化し、これは、デバイスの温度プロフィルへ
変化させ、デバイスの安定性の劣化をもたらす。対流
は、さらに、その流れが乱れている場合は、不安定さを
増加させる。
ローにいかに敏感であるか理解するために、ファイバ軸
を横切る方向に、ファイバを横断して空気が流れる単純
なケースについて考える。対流による熱輸送(伝熱)係
数は、以下の工学(エンジニアリング)関係に従うこと

り小さくなり、結果として、ファイバに近いより暖かい
空気が、浮力を受け、上方に押し上げられるために発生
する。自由対流を特性化する重要なパラメータは、グラ
スホフ数(Grashof number、Gr)であり、これは、浮

じ込めることで、ファイバは強制対流から保護される。
さらに、グラスホフ数(Gr)の値が低い領域において
は、浮力は容器内の流れと関連するせん断力に打ち勝つ
には不十分となり、このため自然(自由)対流も除去さ
れる。(閉じた空間内での自由対流に関しての議論につ
いては、上述のKrieth & Blackの著書のページ261〜
262を参照)。

(Gr)が2000より大きな領域では1となることを

p.189-94,April 1946を参照)。EmeryおよびChuによる
研究は、ヌッセルト数(Nu)は、レイリー数(Ra)
が1000より小さな領域において1となることを示す
(詳しくは、A.Emery and N.C.Chu,“Heat Transfer Ac
ross Vertical Layers",J.Heat Transfer,vol.87,no.1,
pp.110-116,1965を参照)。(適当な長さの尺度が平面
間の距離として用いられる)このような平坦な幾何にお
いてヌッセルト数(Nu)が1であることは、対流は存
在せず、熱の輸送は、純粋に伝導によるものであること
を意味する。グラスホフ数(Gr)の値がより高い領域
においては、両研究とも、ヌッセルト数(Nu)は1よ
り大きく、対流による熱の輸送が存在することを示す。
数(Gr)もしくはレイリー数(Ra)の値が小さな領
域においては、閉じた空間内では自由対流は存在しない
ということである。次に、ファイバデバイスを同軸の円
筒(管)内にパッケージ化することについて考える。b
は容器の半径からファイバの半径を引いた長さ(間隔)
を表すもとする。自由対流は長さの尺度bを通じてある
速度勾配を持つ流れを誘発し、こうして、bを適当な長
さの尺度として用いてグラスホフ数(Gr)を以下のよ
うに求めることが可能となる:
ホフ数(Gr)の値が1〜2×103のオーダより小さ
な領域では、自由対流は存在しないことを期待すること
ができる。こうして、自由空間を除去するために要求さ
れる容器の最小の直径を、上述のグラスホフ数(Gr)
の等式を解くことで推定することができる。室温におけ
る乾燥した空気の特性(物性)は、以下の通りである:

の条件で、グラスホフ数(Gr)を、1〜2×103に
するためには、bの値として約3〜6mmが必要とな

に熱伝導率が小さな発泡材、多孔質材(エーロゲル)そ
の他を詰めることが考えられる。このような材料が有す
る小さなサイズの空気の間隙は対流をより効果的に低減
する。

のほんの一部を、単に一例として示したものであり、当
業者においては、本発明の精神および範囲から逸脱する
ことなく、他の様々な多数の構成が可能であると考え

Claims (8)
- 【請求項1】 パッケージ化された熱的に調節可能な光
ファイバ格子デバイスであって、 ある長さの光ファイバ、前記ある長さのファイバに沿っ
て実質的に等間隔に設けられた複数の格子要素から成る
格子、および前記格子と熱的に接触された電気的に制御
可能な加熱もしくは冷却要素を備えた熱的に調節可能な
光ファイバ格子を含み前記格子が、5cmより小さい
が、ただし、前記ファイバが前記格子と接触することを
回避するのに十分に大きな内径を持つ管内に配置される
ことを特徴とするパッケージ化された格子デバイス。 - 【請求項2】 前記管の内径が1cmあるいはこれ以下
であることを特徴とする請求項1のパッケージ化された
格子デバイス。 - 【請求項3】 前記管が円筒形のチューブから構成され
ることを特徴とする請求項1のパッケージ化された格子
デバイス。 - 【請求項4】 前記円筒形のチューブが弾性のストッパ
にて密封されることを特徴とする請求項3のパッケージ
化された格子デバイス。 - 【請求項5】 前記弾性のストッパが、さらに、前記フ
ァイバを前記円筒形の管内に出し入れできるように毛細
管を備えることを特徴とする請求項4のパッケージ化さ
れた格子デバイス。 - 【請求項6】 前記電気的に制御可能な加熱もしくは冷
却要素が、前記格子に沿って前記ファイバ上に施された
抵抗性コーティングから形成されることを特徴とする請
求項1のパッケージ化された格子デバイス。 - 【請求項7】 前記抵抗性のコーティングが、前記格子
の長さに沿って実質的に一様な抵抗を有することを特徴
とする請求項6のパッケージ化された格子デバイス。 - 【請求項8】 前記抵抗性のコーティングの抵抗に前記
格子の長さに沿って、前記格子の帯域幅を調節する目的
で、局所的な変化が与えられることを特徴とする請求項
6のパッケージ化された格子デバイス。
