Abstract
Absorption heat exchange is effected by generating a refrigerant vapour from an absorbent soln. rich in refrigerant, condensing the refrigerant vapour, evaporating the condensed refrigerant vapour and absorbing the evaporated refrigerant vapour into an absorbent soln. weak in refrigerant to form the absorbent soln. rich in refrigerant. A falling film of absorbent soln. forms on heat exchange surfaces from the top to the bottom of the vessel and refrigerant vapour is released at an inlet at the bottom into a zone adjacent the falling film. The refrigerant vapour is absorbed into the absorbent soln. and heat withdrawn from the falling film through the heat exchange surfaces to establish a temp. and concn. gradient between the top and the bottom of the vessel. Used in an absorption heat pump for mixing soln. depleted of refrigerant e.g. weak liquor from the generator, with evaporated refrigerant from the condenser. Because of the temp. and concn. gradient refrigerant introduced at the inlet contacts the least hot and richest soln. in the absorption zone. Consequently the evapn. of absorbent into the dry vapour and the accompanying temp. drop is minimized at that point. In addn. the temp. at the hot top end adjacent the weak liquor inlet is maximised so that the temps. in the rich liquor and coolant are maximised.
