Abstract
The analogue output of a matrix of photo detectors used for alpha numeric character identification reading, is converted into a binary coded format with correction made for background conditions. The photo detectors (1) are arranged in a matrix and the signals from each column are processed by level control stages (13), that perform a correction for angle of inclination between the object (2) and the detectors. The generated signals are subjected to a comparison process (15) to produce a reference voltage (Vref), corrected for background intensity. Comparators (14) generate equivalent binary signals (B) for input to an identification stage.
