Abstract

Chocks are acted upon by clamps to oppose axially and transversely exerted forces on a work roll during a mill operation. Bearing pads are positioned opposed surfaces of the chocks and the clamps. Each of the pads has integrally joined alternating layers of metal and an elastomer lying in planes perpendicular to the chock axes. The layers are subjected both to compression between the opposed surfaces and to shear tending to distort the elastomer layers to accommodate chock movement in the direction of rolling as tension is developed in the prod. being rolled. Accurate measurement of prod. tension can be made using sensing devices acting on the bearing blocks. The combined use of the laminated bearing pads for opposing axial forces and rocker assemblies for opposing transverse or roll separating forces permits the chocks to more minutely in the direction of rolling without attendant frictional resistance which could impair the accuracy of the pending devices.
