Abstract

The conveyor transports workpieces which have to undergo a series of operations along its top run, e.g. electric motor rotors for winding and welding. The supports (7) for the workpieces are arranged in a number of groups, those in any one group having a particular characteristic, differing from the others, to accommodate the workpieces at a particular machining stage. Both the feed mechanism (10) and each machining station (12, 14) are so arranged that a workpiece can only be deposited in the right support, in addition to which each station only extracts it from the appropriate one. The state of the system and the positions of full or empty supports are determined by detector units (38, 40),so as to allow extraction and delivery of workpieces. Any workpiece which has travelled along the top conveyor run and missed any of the machining operations is recirculated.
