Abstract

988,347. Endless belt conveyers. PROSPECT MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. Feb. 24, 1964, No. 7598/64. Heading B8A. Articles are passed to a conveyer for subsequent delivery to any of a plurality of preselected stations by apparatus comprising (Figs. 1, 4) a main belt 10 passing articles to deflectors 12, 14 and down a slide 16 to transfer belts 20, 21 which deliver the articles to tables 22, 23. Each table 22, 23 has an associated photo-cell 26, the interruption of the associated light beam stopping the associated belt to prevent articles piling up on the table. A pair of delivery belts 24 is associated with the tables 22, 23 and each delivery belt 24 has an associated article detecting photo-cell 28. An operator checks the destination of an article on a table (say 22) and codes it by means of a control unit (not shown). The article is then placed on the belt 24 and is carried at low speed until it is detected by the photo-cell 28 which acts to stop the belt 24. A conveyer comprising tilting trays 52 passes the delivery end of the belt 24 and as a tray 52 comes into position opposite the delivery end of the belt 24 it mechanically actuates a switch to energize a solenoid 42 associated with belt drive means 40 to cause the delivery belt 24 to operate at high speed to pass the article to the tray 52. Simultaneously, the control means transfers the delivery code to the conveyer so that the tray 52 dumps the article at the assigned station. Fig. 3 shows an embodiment wherein the delivery belt 24 is replaced by a delivery belt 56 mounted on a carriage running on tracks 62. Movement of the carriage is synchronized with the high speed drive of the delivery belt so as to move alongside the tray 52 whilst the article is passed thereto. The apparatus may be used in sorting postal articles.
