Abstract

Metallic studs anchored in the shoulder and rolling surfaces of a tyre tread are positioned so as to obtain a uniform distribution of studs with a density of 1 stud per 20 cm2 tread surface. The stud frequency pattern is optimised for providing grip on ice or packed snow without excessive stud or road wear or lack of grip when used in dry or wet conditions on hard surfaces. Stud distribution is pref. such that there is >30 cm2 and 45 cm2, pref. about 36 cm2, tread area is regular in each individual array and staggered circumferentially or so that =2 studs are aligned across the tread surface parallel to the axis of rotation.
