Abstract
555,633. Pneumatic tyres. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. March 14, 1941, No. 3542. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1940. [Class 144 (ii)] To minimize objectionable noise from resonant vibrations set up in a tyre, the tread is formed with a plurality of traction elements, such as serrations or slits in the side edges of circumferential ribs, Figs. 1, 6, arranged in a series of successive circumferential groups, such as A-H, Fig. 3, each group occupying the full tread width and the elements of any one group being each of different circumferential length from that of the elements in adjacent groups. In the serrated rib pattern shown in Fig. 1 the resultant zig-zag ribs intermesh and the centre lines of the elements (through the peaks and valleys) are transverselh aligned on axes parallel to the tyre axis Due to the convexity of the tread surface this results in the lengths of the elements (between peaks) towards the sides of the tread being less, in each group, that the lengths of the elements towards the crown region of the tread. This applies also to the elements formed by the slits shown in Fig. 6, the lengths being measured circumferentially between adjacent slits in each rib. The slits are preferably of rounded bottom formation, sawn, cut or moulded in the tread.
