Abstract

744,448. Tyre treads. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Dec. 2, 1953 [Jan. 26, 1953], No. 33477/53. Class 144 (2). A tyre tread is formed by an odd number of pairs, in excess of one, of parallel, zig-zag circumferential ribs 13, 14; 15, 16; 17, 18, separated by grooves, the grooves 34, 35 between each pair of ribs being relatively wide compared with the grooves 21, 22, 23, between the ribs of each pair. As shown, the laterally outer ribs 13, 15 of three pairs are each formed with laterally outward projections 19, 20 respectively and all the ribs 13-18 and the projections 19, 20 are broken at circumferentially spaced intervals by narrow transverse through grooves 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 24 and 25 respectively. The projection grooves 24, 25 merge with the adjacent circumferential grooves 21, 22 via grooves 32, 33 respectively directed at an angle of 60 degrees to the tread centre line across the laterally outer apices of the ribs 13, 14. The transverse grooves 24-33 split the ribs into chevron-like segments and are arranged so that each groove is flanked at its ends by continuous rib portions and so that the ribs adjacent the laterally outer ribs comprise twice the number of segments contained in each of the other ribs. The arrangement of the ribs into an odd number of pairs provides for a central pair of ribs zig-zagging about the tread centre line. The zig-zag rib portions may be directed at an angle of 45 degrees to the tread centre line and may be of different pitch at intervals circumferentially of the tread to obviate tread noise in operation.
