Abstract

546,975. Tyre treads. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., KING, F. G. W., LAMBOURN, L. J., and MCNALLY, F. J. Feb. 4, 1941, No. 1436. [Class 144 (ii)] A pneumatic tyre tread of the kind in which portions of the load supporting ribs are softened and rendered more flexible and more compressible than the remainder, comprises clusters of small holes formed at circumferentially staggered intervals in adjacent ribs to render said portions of cellular formation. The tread is divided by circumferential grooves 4 into tread portions. 1, 2, 3 of varying widths and each tread portion is provided with spaced clusters of apertures 5, 6, 7, which are staggered circumferentially in adjacent tread portions. The holes in each set may be of different depths and the holes in the side tread bands may be inclined with respect to the vertical. The bases of holes in each set may be interconnected and in some cases the base of holes in different sets in the same band may be interconnected. The holes may be circular, diamondshape, square, .triangular or hexagonal in section or be formed as slots of different lengths and the rows in each set may be staggered so as to form inclined softened spots 5, 13a across the band. The edges of the sets may be defined by transverse slits 13 in the tyre. The holes may vary in section depthwise.
