Abstract

903,389. Pneumatic tyre treads. PIRELLI S.p.A. Sept. 9, 1958 [Sept. 30, 1957], No. 28904/58. Class 144 (2). A pneumatic tyre has a tread comprising sinuous or partially zig-zag circumferential grooves 1 from the bases of which integrally project radially outwardly a series of stud-like projections 2 which are spaced from each other and from the groove sidewalls, and at least some of which are circular in cross-section. As shown, the opposed walls of each groove 1 comprise arcuate portions connected by straight portions to define a serpentine groove, and the projections 2 are of circular section radiused at their bases to the groove sidewalls. The projections 2 may extend the full depth of each groove or may vary in height within the ranges two-thirds to full, one-third to twothirds, or one-fifth to one-third, the depth of the groove in which they are disposed. The projections may also vary in height or circumferential spacing within each groove or from groove to groove. The projections may be of circular, elliptical or polygonal in cross-section and may be cylindrical or frusto-conical.
