Claims (14)
1. An antenna system for radiating wave energy in a desired radiation pattern comprising an antenna aperture for radiating wave energy patterns in response to wave energy excitations and means for supplying a composite wave energy excitation having on said aperture an amplitude and phase distribution which is substantially the superposition of a plurality of component aperture excitations, including a reference component excitation and other component excitations having both positive and negative phase variation on said aperture with respect to said reference excitation, characterized in that said component excitations with positive phase variation have with respect to said reference excitation an average phase displacement which is a first monotonic function of said phase variation and said component excitations with negative phase variation have with respect to said reference excitation an average phase displacement which is a second monotonic function of said phase variation, all excitations having phase variation with respect to said reference excitation having the same sense of average phase displacement with respect to said reference excitation. characterized
2. An antenna system as specified in claim 1/ in that said aperture comprises means for focusing incident wave energy, and wherein said means for supplying a composite wave energy excitation comprises means for illuminating said focusing means.
3. An antenna system as specified in claim 2,characterized in that said focusing means comprises a focusing reflector.
4. An antenna system as specified in claim 2,characterized in that said focusing means comprises a transmissive focusing means.
5. An antenna system as specified in claims 2, 3 characterized or 4/in that said means for illuminating comprises a plurality of feed elements, each of said feed elements illuminating said focusing means with one of said component aperture excitations.
6. An antenna system as specified in claim 1 characterized in that said aperture comprises an array of antenna elements for radiating wave energy patterns in response to wave energy excitations, and in that said means for supplying a composite wave energy excitation comprises means for supplying wave energy to said elements.
7. An antenna system as specified in claim 6 ,characterized in that said aperture comprises a linear array of antenna elements.
8. An antenna system as specified in claim 6 , characterized in that said aperture comprises a planar array of antenna elements .
9. An antenna system as specified in claim 6 , characterized in that said aperture comprises a cylindrical array of said antenna le ents.
10. An antenna system as specified in claim 7 characterized /in that said linear array of antenna elements comprises a linear array of slots on a waveguide and said means for supplying wave energy to said elements comprises said 5 waveguide, the orientation and location of said slots on said waveguide being selected to supply said composite wave energy excitation to said slot elements.
11. An antenna system as specified in claim 10 characterized /in that said waveguide is a rectangular waveguide.
12. An antenna system as specified in claim 11 characterized /in that said slots are formed into one of the narrow walls of said waveguide.
13. An antenna system as specified in claim 11 characterized /in that said slots are formed into one of the broad walls of said waveguide.
14. An antenna system as specified in preceding characterized claims 7 thio ugh 13,/in that said component aperture exci¬ tations are uniform-amplitude, orthogonal-phase excitations. / / For the Applicants
