Claims (11)
1. An antenna system for radiating a plurality of planar beams and having a desired radiation angle in the plane of each beam comprising means for cylindrically focusing incident wave energy and means for illuminating said focusing means with wave energy patterns, characterize 5 in that said focusing . means has a radiating surface whose a length subtends an angle, viewed from a point on the. focal a of said focusing means, which is substantially equal to said desired radiation angle, and said illuminating is arranged t illuminate said focusing means with a number of wave energy 0 patterns equal to the number of planar beams desired, each o said patterns having a phase center located at a different selected point in space, in the vicinity of said point on sa focal axis, whereby when said focusing means is illuminated any one of said patterns, a corresponding planar beam will b 5 radiated in a direction which is unique to that beam, when observed in a plane perpendicular to said focal axis, and having said desired radiation angle in the plane of that bea

An antenna system as specified in claim 1, characterized in that said means for illuminating said focus means comprises a number of feed elements, equal to the numb of planar beams desired and each for illuminating said 5 focusing means with wave energy pattern, said feed elements being located in the vicinity of said point on said focal in axis and having/a plane which is perpendicular to said focal axis a component of angular displacement from each other when viewed from the center of said focusing means.

An antenna system as specified in claim 1 or 2, characterized in that said means for cylindrically focusing comprises reflecting means for cylindrically focusing incident wave energy, said reflecting means having an axial length which subtends an angle, viewed from a point on the focal axis of said reflecting means, which is substantially equal to said desired radiation angle.
4. An antenna system as specified in claim 3, characterized in that said reflecting means is a parabolic cylindrical surface.
5. An antenna system as specified in claim 3, characterized in that said reflecting means is a circular cylindrical surface.
6. An antenna system as specified in claim 3, characterized in that said reflecting means is an array of reflecting elements.
7. An antenna system as specified in claim 3,4,5 or 6, characterized in that said feed elements are waveguide feed horns located in the vicinity of said point on said focal axis and having in a plane which is perpendicular to said focal axis substantially equal components of angular displacement from each other, viewed from the center of said reflecting means .
8. An antenna system as specified in claim 1 or 2, characterized in that said means for cylindrically focusing comprises transmissive means for cylindrically focusing incident wave energy.
9. An antenna system as specified in claim 8, characterized in that said transmissive means is a lens struc ture having a wave energy propagation velocity which is different from the propagation velocity of the surrounding medium.
10. An antenna system as specified in claim 8 or 9, characterized in that said transmissive means is a cylindrical Luneberg lens.
11. An antenna system as specified in claim 8, characterized in that said transmissive means comprises a first array of antenna elements for receiving said incident wave energy, means for shifting the phase of the wave energy received by each of the elements of said first array by a selected amount and a second array of antenna elements for radiating said phase shifted wave energy.
