2. Apparatus according to Claim 1, wherein the housing includes a removable door having an aperture therethrough over which the ionizer is externally mounted for transmitting ionizing radiation into the working region within the housing.
3. Apparatus according to Claim 1, wherein the housing has the ionizer mounted therein for transmitting ionizing radiation into the working region.
4. Apparatus according to Claim 2 or 3, wherein the ionizer is a generator of electrons. * ί 44342/2
5. Apparatus according to any of Claims 1 to 4, wherein the gas flow arrangement includes a duct-defined flow path carrying the outflow of the medium from the optical cavity structure to and through a gas cooling device and back, in cooled condition, to said cavity structure.
6. Apparatus according to Claim 5 wherein a medium-circulating blower is located in the duct-defined flow path between the medium outlet of the gas cooling device and a medium inflow connection to the optical cavity structure.
7. Apparatus according to Claim 6, wherein the medium inflow connection consists of a nozzle capable of increasing the blower-imparted velocity of the medium as the medium flows into the working region.
8. Apparatus according to any Of Claims 5 to 7, wherein the gas flow arrangement includes a gas supply conduit connected to the duct-defined flow path and sealably extending through a outer wall of the housing for connection to a source of the medium, a gas evacuating conduit being connected at one end to the interior space of the housing for connection at the other end to a vacuum source.
