Abstract

1426161 Lasers AVCO EVERETT RESEARCH LABORATORY Inc 27 Feb 1974 [9 March 1973] 8973/74 Heading H1C To minimize atmospheric contamination of a gaseous active medium repeatedly circulated through a gas discharge region containing an optical resonator and electric field electrodes, the gas circulating arrangement 48, the electric field electrodes 36, and the resonator 28, are mounted within a single housing 12 sealed from atmospheric pressure and evacuated or pressurized to match the gas pressure in the gas discharge region. The gas, which may be Ar, Xn or Kr, or a mixture of CO 2 , and He, is circulated by a blower 60, and passes through an accelerating nozzle 62 into the gas discharge region for ionization by an ionizer 22 to produce a discharge between the field electrodes. The circulated gas is cooled by a heat exchanger coupled to a coolant source extemally of the housing. The housing includes an aerodynamic window 46 for the laser radiation and has sealed end doors 14, 16. The atmosphere within the housing is pump evacuated through a duct 50, and any loss of the circulated active medium from the gas discharge region is made up through a gas supply duct 54. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the ionizer is secured on the external surface of door 14 which includes an aperture for the ionizing radiation.
