Claims (7)
1. A method for the molten salt electrolysis of metal chlorides, preferably for the molten salt electrolytic production of magnesium , employing an electrolyzer having double- acting cathodes* in which t e gas separation zones of a number of cells communicate with a common metal separation zone, and ih which the electrolyte due to i.a. the gas lift effect is circulating in a closed loop between the electrolysis zone of each cell and the outside-ly ng zones, characterized in that electrolyte together with the metal formed are separated -from the chlorine produced, by deflection in a direction opposite that of the rising gas bubbles, the metal and the electrolyte being made to flow through openings and ducts provided in each of said double-acting cathbdeV, Which ducts terminate at or in the adjacent metal separation and collection zone, whereupon the electrolyte is made to flow through openings near the bottom of the! electrolyzer and into the electrolysis zones to again be subjected to electrolysis, the metal rising, as known per se, to tne surface in the metal collection zone.
2. A method according to claim 1 characterized in that the metal/electrolyte mixture is made to flow through openings provided in the cathodes at the level of the cathode top hdr Eontal plane.
3. -3 An electrolyzer having anodes and cathodes provided alternately therein and having a partition wall between electrolysis and gas separation zones on one side and metal separation zones on the other for carrying out the method of claim 1 or 2, characterized in that in the double-acting cathodes there are provided with one or more ducts to provide communication between gas separation zone and metal separation zone .
4. An electrolyzer according to claim 3, characterized in that said duct or ducts has/have inlet opening in or at the cathode top horizontal plane.
5. An electrolyzer according to claim 4, characterized in that the cathodes are double-walled and hollow with a U-shaped cross section and have an open cathode top and are extended through the vertical partition wall so that the outlet openings of said ducts are in the vertical plane of said partition wall.
6. An electrolyzer according to claim 5 , characterized in that in the extended portion of the cathodes, the ducts are provided with a downwardly sloping ceiling.
7. An electrolyzer according to claim 6, characterized in that the bottom portion of said ducts is made slightly sloping towards the partition wall. Attorn^/ for Applicants
