Claims (1)
1. 44051- CLAIMS: ( 1, A method of forming a bell end on a heat deformable pipe, said bell end being free of gasket retainer rings, said method' comprising: placing a sealing gasket around an elongated core and 1n a circumferential recess located on the outer surface o said core and to one side of a predetermined segment thereof; heating at leas an end portion of said heat deformable pipe to the range of thermo-elastlc deformablllty; positioning one end of said core into a heated end portion of said pipe by relative movement between said core and said end portion; providing relative movement between said core and said heated end portion so that said end portion extends around at least a portion of said core Including said gasket and said predetermined. segment; during said last-mentioned relative movement and as said end portion approaches said gasket along said predetermined segment, causing said end portion to deform outwardly and thereafter causing a longitudinal portion thereof to pass over said gasket; and after said longitudinal portion has passed over said gasket and reached a predetermined position, causing the end portion positioned on opposite sides of said gasket to retract Inwardly so as to produce an Inner- ci cumferential groove around said gasket while said gasket remains 1n said recess and after the j temperature of said, end portion is below the range of thermoelastlc deformablllty, withdrawing said core from said end portion and ' . gasket by relative movement between said core and end portion CHARACTER I Z!iD in that the step of causing said end portion to defotjpi outwardly ncludes moving said end portion up a movable ramped 44051 - surface and a second position wiilch substantially eliminates the ramped surface. 9. An assembly according to Claim 8 CHARACTERIZED 1n. that said movable ramp Includes a plurality of elongated members drcum-ferentlally spaced apart around the axis of said core with each member having one end plvotally connected for pivotable movement of said member between said first position and said second position. 10. An assembly according to either of Claims 0 or 9 for use n the method defined 1n any one of Claims 3-7 CHARACTERIZED b further comprising at least one deforming meinber. located adjacent . said groove forming member around said core section and movable between a first position spaced from said heated pipe section after formation of said groove and a second position so that, 1n said . second position, said at least one deforming member being adapted engage against said pipe section and decrease the longitudinal distance between at least one pair of longitudinally aligned surface segments along outwardly extending surfaces defining said groove. ; 11. An assembly according to Claim 10 CHARACTERIZED in that said at least one deforming member, when in said second position, is adapted to engage against said pipe section at a plurality of : points and decrease the longitudinal distance betv/een a plurality of pairs of longitudinally aligned surface segments along and spaced around said surfaces, defining said groove. . . }?..
