Abstract
A method and apparatus for scrubbing gases with liquid. It employs at least one nozzle which discharges a stream of gas downwardly against the surface of a body of scrubbing liquid (e.g., water). The nozzle is made with converging flat side walls to provide an elongated discharge opening which extends horizontally over the body of scrubbing liquid. The impingement of the discharging gas upon the liquid body serves to depress the surface of the liquid to form a trough-like region. Some scrubbing action is caused by such impingement, and the impingement causes some of the liquid to be entrained in the gas flow whereby a gas-liquid mixture flows in opposite lateral directions from the sides of the trough-like region. The nozzle is provided with shield means whereby the movement of gas and entrained liquid from the trough-like region is confined. Preferably the method and apparatus makes use of a plurality of such nozzles disposed side by side.

Claims (6)
1. A gas scrubbing apparatus comprising a reservoir adapted to contain a body of liquid at constant level, at least one nozzle disposed within the upper part of the reservoir and directed downwardly to discharge gas to be scrubbed onto the surface of the liquid and a substantially horizontal shield at the lower end of the nozzle to confine the space adjacent the nozzle, the latter being characterised in that the outlet opening thereof is elongated.
2. A gas scrubbing apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which the outlet opening of the nozzle is a slot with parallel sides.
3. A gas scrubbing apparatus as claimed in either claim 1 or 2 in which the nozzle includes two opposite and flat converging side walls.
4. A gas scrubbing apparatus as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the reservoir contains a plurality of nozzles disposed side by side and fed by a common manifold.
5. A gas scrubbing apparatus as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the exhaust of the scrubber is substantially parallel to the elongated outlet openingi
6. A gas scrubbing apparatus substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings .
