Claims

1. A method of growing grass in which the grass growth takes place through apertures in a flat or substantially flat upper load bearing surface of a tile having projections extending from the underside thereof, the tile having sufficient rigidity and hardness to withstand the normal loading imposed on the grass area, as herein defined, the grass being rooted in soil mixture in the spaces between the projedtions on the under-surfaoe of the tile, which mixture is protected by the ti}e from undue compression by said normal loading.

2. A method of growing grass according to Claim 1 wherein a layer of seeded soil mixture is provided over an area which is to be grassed and a plurality of said tiles, each having a flat topped surface and projections on the underside, are pressed down into the soil mixture.

3. A method of growing grass according to Claim 1 in which a plurality of said tiles, each having a flat topped surface and projections on the underside, are pressed down into the surface of an existing grassed area.

4. A method of growing grass according to Claim 2 wherein the layer of seeded soil mixture is established on an existing soil foundation upon which is first plaoed a perforated sheet of plastics material, the soil mixture being then laid above said sheet.

5. A method of growing grass according to Claim 1 wherein a plurality of said tiles, each having a flat topped surface and ribs on the underside, have a seeded 13 - soil mixture packed into the undersides thereof and such pre-packed tiles are laid directly on to a foundation.

6. A method of growing grass according to Claim 5 wherein the tiles are laid upon a sloping surface or attached to a vertical surface.

A tile for use in the method of growing grass according to Claim 1 comprising a flat, or substantially flat, load-bearing surface having a plurality of apertures therein, generally evenly spaced over the area of said surface and having on its underside a number of projections, all of the same depth measured from the underside of said surface, the material and construction of the tile providing sufficient inherent hardness and rigidity to withstand the normal loading (as herein defined) imposed on a grass area.

8. A tile according to Claim 7 which is of square or rectangular form and has a plurality of ribs on its underside, extending transversely between the opposed pairs of sides of the tile.

9. A tile according to Claim 8 wherein, on two adjacent sides, the ribs extend beyond the edge of the tile to form supporting lugs, each lug having an upper surface spaced below the top surface of the tile by a distance equal to the thickness of the top of the tile. - 14 -

10. A tile according to Claim 7 formed from perforated plastic or metal sheet and the projections being in the form of ribs which are bent or pressed from the sheet.

11. A combined tile and seeded soil mixture comprising a tile according to Claim 7 wherein the projections comprise transversely extending ribs and wherein a seeded soil mixture is packed into the areas between said ribs.
