Claims (16)
1. A heat exchange system comprising: a source of heat; a first heat exchanger for transferring heat from said source to a first fluid comprising a matrix of tubular elements bonded together with a plurality of bodies which provide passages for combustion products therethrough the average length of said passages being less than 20 times the average radius of curvature of said bodies; first conduit means for circulating said first fluid between said first heat exchanger and a second heat · exchanger for transferring heat from said first fluid to a second fluid; and second conduit means for circulating said second fluid through said second heat exchanger.
2. The heat transfer system in accordance with Claim 1 wherein said first fluid is a liquid.
3. The heat transfer system in accordance with Claim 2 wherein said liquid is maintained substantially at or below atmospheric pressure.
4. The heat transfer system in accordance with Claim 3 wherein said source of heat comprises a burner.
5. The heat transfer system in accordance with Claim 4 wherein said first and second heat exchangers are mounted in spaced relationship in a package unit. 40337/2
6. ·■ > The -heat transfer system in accordance with Claim 5 wherein said package unit comprises means for both heating and cooling said second fluid.>
7. The heat exchange system in accordance with Claim 6 wherein said cooling means comprises a third heat exchanger for rejecting heat.
8. The heat exchange system in accordance with Claim 7 wherein said second and third heat exchangers are located at the opposite ends of said package.
9.. The heat exchange system in accordance with Claim 1 wherein circulation of said fluids through said heat exchangers is provided whenever the temperature of said first fluid is above a pre-selected value.
10. The heat exchange system in accordance with Claim 9 wherein said pre-selected value of said temperature is below the boiling point of said first fluid at the pressure of said first fluid in said first heat exchanger.!
11. A package heat exchange system for providing heated and/or cooled air comprising: first heat exchange means positioned adjacent one end of said package for exchanging heat with said air; means for attaching air ducts to said package adjacent said first heat exchanger for conducting air through said heat exchanger; means positioned in said package adjacent said first heat exchanger for forcing air through said first heat exchanger and said ducts ; second heat exchange means positioned adjacent the opposite ends of said package from said first heat exchange means; means located between said first and second heat exchange means for pumping thermal energy from said first to said second heat exchange means for rejection of heat from said package during the cooling of said air; - 16 - 40337/2 means positioned between said first and second heat exchange means for producing the products of combustion and for directing said products of combustion through a third heat exchange means for transferring thermal energy from said products of combustion to a fluid, with the surface area of said third heat exchange means in heat exchange relationship to said products of combustion being substantially greater than the surface area of said third heat exchange means in heat exchange relationship with said fluid; and means for circulating said fluid through said first and third heat exchange means for transferring thermal energy therebetween.
12. The package heat exchange system in accordance with Claim 11 including a storage tank for said first fluid positioned in said package at an elevation above said third heat exchange means .
13. The package heat exchange system in accordance with Claim 12 wherein means are provided for maintaining the interior of said storage tank substantially at atmospheric pressure.
14. The package heat exchange system in accordance with Claim 13 wherein said means for producing products of combustion comprises a burner fed by a fuel-air mixture.
15. The package heat exchange system In accordance with Claim 14 wherein said fuel-air mixture is supplied to said burner by a blower having a control circuit comprising a switch in temperature sensing relationship with said third heat exchanger and said fuel is a gas which is fed to the intake of said blower through a pressure regulator and a solenoid controlled valve whose control circuit is energized through said switch.
16. The package heat exchange system in accordance with Claim 15 wherein said pressure regulator produces an output gas pressure which is below atmospheric pressure. Attorneys for A p p l i c a n t
