Abstract

1372152 Coated glass bodies TSUKIHOSHI KASEI KK 11 Aug 1972 [13 Aug 1971 11 Dec 1971] 37490/72 Heading B2E A glass body, such as a bottle, light tube, bulb, a plate or vase, is coated on its surface with a first elastic polymer film which adheres to the body or a primer thereon, and a second film covering the first film, thereby preventing glass fragments scattering when the glass body breaks. The outer layer has a tensile strength greater than 200 kg/cm<SP>2</SP>. Preferably the outer film has a different polarity from that of the inner film to reduce bonding therebetween, and the inner film may incorporate an antibonding agent such as silicone oil or emulsion or a surfactant. The films may be transparent. Optionally, a primer is applied to the glass body from solution by dipping, and may comprise carboxylated S.B.R. latex, vinyl chloride/ carboxylated or hydroxylated vinyl acetate copolymer, acrylic resins or epoxy resin modified p.v.c. The inner layer may be optionally vulcanised natural rubber solution or latex; synthetic rubber (e.g. S.B.R. block copolymer, polychloroprene, or A.B.R., solution or latex; plastisol, organosol or powder of polyvinyl chloride; or vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer solution. The inner layer may be applied by dipping, fluidised bed, or spraying. The outer layer may be an epoxy resin, onecomponent moisture-sensitive polyurethane, polyurethane rubber and hardening agent, polycarbonate, polyester, polystyrene, or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, applied from solution by spraying or dipping. 40026/4 Claims: '
1. Glass shaped body having multi-layer protective coating films of high polymer substance, characterized by an inner protective coating film formed from elastic material such as natural rubber, synthetic rubber or synthetic resins which are capable of intimately contacting the surface of the glass shaped body and having moderate adhesion thereto, and an outer protective coating film covering said inner protective coating film formed from a high polymer substance having higher mechanical strength than that of the inner film, said inner protective coating film having an adhesive strength with respect to wall surface of the glass shaped body in the range of about 0.1 to 3.0 kg/cm and having such adhesive strength with respect to the surface of said glass shaped body that its latitude of elongation is substantially zero in its state of being coated on the body surface, but, at the time of breakage of said glass shaped body, it exfoliates from the body surface to aause a certain latitude of elongation, thereby preventing broken glass fragments from scattering.
2. A method of manufacturing glass shaped body having multi-layer high polymer protective caoting films, characterized in that an inner protective coating film is first coated onto the surface of the glass shaped body, said inner film being formed from elastic material such as natural rubber, synthetic rubber, or synthetic resin which is capable of intimately contacting the body surface and having moderate adhesion thereto, then an outer protective coating film is coated over the inner protective coating film, said outer film being formed from a high polymer substance having higher mechanical strength than that of the inner film, said inner protective coating film having an adhesive strength with respect to wall surface of the glass shaped body in the range of about 0.1 to 3.0 kg/cm and having such adhesive strenh with respect to the surface of the glass shaped body that its latitude of elongation is substantially eero in its state of being coated on the body surface, but, at the time of breakage of said glass

7. The method according to claim 2, wherein the inner film is one selected from the group consisting of natural rubber, synthetic rubbers and vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, and the outer film is one selected from the group consisting of a solution of polyester and polycarbonate.
8. The method according to claim 2, wherein the inner film is one selected from the group consisting of natural rubber, synthetic rubbers and vinyl chloride homopolymers, and the outer film is ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer.
9. ·:' The method according to claim 2, wherein the application of the inner and outer films is carried out by dipping the glass shaped article to be protected into the inner and outer layer liquids.
10. The method according to claim 2, wherein the application of the inner film is carried out by spraying the high polymer substance onto the glass shaped article to be protected, and application of the outer film is done by dipping.
