Abstract

A switch unit (1) for an electric immersion heater (4) for mounting on the wall (2) of a liquid heating vessel, includes a snap acting bimetallic actuator (33) which is exposed, in use, to vapour emerging through an outlet (37) from the vessel, and which is of the type disclosed in Specification 1542232. An overcentre spring mechanism couples the bimetallic actuator (33) to a movable contact (21) of the switch for opening and closing the switch, the overcentre spring mechanism being movable between a first position (as shown) in which the switch is closed and power can be supplied to the immersion heater (4) and a second position in which the switch is open for interrupting the supply of power to the immersion heater. A lever (25) of the overcentre mechanism is pivotally mounted on the body (7) of the switch and a spring (28) of the overcentre mechanism is mounted between fulcrums (29, 30) provided by the lever (25) and the body (7) so that the spring (28) biases the lever (25) into direct or indirect engagement with the bimetallic actuator (33) in the closed switch position. <IMAGE> [GB2040572A]
