Abstract
981,751. Thermal switches; cam-operated switches; two-part couplings combined with switches. SEEMARK SWITCHES Ltd. Feb. 13, 1961 [Feb. 12, 1960], No. 5069/60. Headings H2B and H2E A timer comprises a heat-sensitive element, heating means therefor and cycle-control means associated therewith in controlling relation thereto and operable by thermal movements of said element, in combination with main controloperating means including a spring-driven stepwise moving member co-operating with a detent connected with the heat-sensitive element so as to move step by step as successive thermal movements are performed by the element, thereby to operate a main control after a predetermined number of steps. In the form shown, the heat-sensitive element consists of an adjustably mounted bi-metal strip 36 which when cold holds closed contacts on a pair of strips 46, 47 so as to energize heaters 45 for the bi-metal. As this is heated its centre rises (out of the Figure) and allows the contacts to open to de-energize the bi-metal which thus re-cools, and this cycling continues until a main switch (Fig. 5, not shown) is opened. The main switch is controlled by a cam attached to a toothed wheel 42 which is biased by a spring which is energized by depressing a button 13 to rotate a segment 67 and meshing pinion 66. As the bimetal is heated and cooled, detents 40, 41 thereon allow step by step movement of the wheel 42 until the main switch is opened. The main switch may be opened manually at any time by depressing a further button 14 which is then latched by a bar 98 until freed by depression of button 13. The timer may be incorporated in a wall socket or a plug.
