Description

This invention concerns improvements in joints for connecting together hollow frame members, particularly but not exclusively, hollow frame members forming a door or window frame.
It is already known to provide hollow frame members of substantially uniform section which are connected together to provide a frame for doors or as windows, and wherein the frame members are connected together by special forms of corner cleats. With some forms of cleats, one or both sections to be joined have to be especially prepared by profiled cuts to accommodate the cleat. With other forms of cleats, the joint eventually formed is not sufficiently rigid and there can be a tendency for the joint to twist, which in turn may cause the joint to become insecure and the whole construction of the door or window frame is weakened and unsatisfactory.
Many forms of cleats or corner connections have to be specifically designed for the profile of the frame sections, and this leads to problems and excessive costs where a range of frame sections may be employed to form different styles or types of frames.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple form of joint for connecting together hollow frame members in which no special profile cutting is required, and wherein the joint can be assembled in a simple manner.
It is another objective of this invention to provide a joint for connecting hollow frame members wherein the joint prevents relative twisting of the 3 frame members when connected, and wherein the joint provides a rigid reinforcement for the two frame members adjacent the joint.
Other objectives and advantages of this invention 5 will be referred to later herein.
In a door or window frame, first and second hollow frame members are connected by a joint including two joint blocks, the first frame member is a section having opposed flanges extending from one side defining 10 a channel extending lengthwise of the member, the second frame member is a section extending normally to the first frame member and abutting the free edges of said flanges, each joint block has formations for complementary engagement with formations within the 15 hollow section of the second frame member for slidably locating each joint block within the abutting end of said second frame member, means for securing each joint block to the second frame member so that a portion of each joint block extends into the channel of the first 20 frame member, and respective fastening means extending transversely through the first frame member engaging each of the joint blocks to rigidly connect the first and second frame members together.
In the joint according to this invention, the 25 joint blocks engage both the second and first frame members and extend therebetween in the confines of the channel of the first frame member and the interior of the second frame member. The joint blocks are located in the second frame member and provide a rigid 30 reinforcement for the end of the second frame member, and the projecting ends of the joint blocks are received within the channel of the first frame member to prevent relative twisting of the two frame members. 4 As the channel provided in the first frame member extends lengthwise of the member, the position of the joint can be selected at any required location, and no special profile cutting of the abutting faces of the 5 first and second frame members is required.
Preferably, the joint blocks are relatively spaced apart and provide two locations spaced apart in the longitudinal extent of the channel of the first frame member.
By such an arrangement, the bending and twisting forces to which the joint is subjected in use and during assembly are distributed in the longitidinal extent of the first frame member preventing local distortion.
Preferably, the complementary formations of the joint blocks and the second frame member are selected from any one of the following combinations!- flanges and grooves, ribs and grooves, inter-engaging splines or like formations extending lengthwise of the joint 20 blocks and the second frame member.
Conveniently, by providing such formations, these can be provided in a second frame member of uniform section along it's length, and the joint block can be produced to match the selected configuration of the 25 formation provided in the second frame member. Thus, both the second frame member and the joint blocks can be made from extruded sections which merely have to be cut to the desired length by a simple parting off cut without special profiling.
As the joint blocks are arranged for sliding location within the second frame member, the joint blocks are initially located accurately with respect to the second frame member and this simplifies assembly.
Preferably, the joint blocks are secured to the second frame member by suitable fasteners, such as threaded studs, rivets or by crimping, and in such securing the joint blocks are positioned so that they project from the end of the second frame member for reception within the channel.
The fastening means provided for connecting the joint blocks and second frame member to the first frame member are threaded bolts which extend through the wall of the first frame member forming the base of the channel.
Preferably, the fastening means extends through a support plate mounted internally of the first frame member and abutting the said wall forming the base of the channel.
The first frame member is provided with clearance holes providing access to the hollow interior of the member for locating and tightening the threaded bolts.
The holes provided in the first frame member and support plate would be spaced apart to be aligned and to be in register with the the joint blocks, each of which blocks is provided with a threaded bore complementary to the threaded shank of each threaded bolt.
By such an arrangement, the connection of the first and second frame members can be achieved in a simple manner with the only operations being required on the first frame member being the provision of the holes through which the bolts extend.
Other features of this invention and alternative constructions will be described later herein.
An exemplary embodiment of this invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:- FIGURE I is an exploded perspective view showing the component parts of a joint in a door frame; and FIGURE 2 is a sectional view of the joint assembled from the component parts shown in Figure 1.
With reference to the drawings, a door frame includes various frame members of which a first member 1 is a vertical stile and a second member 2 is a bottom rail for connection at one end to the bottom of the stile to provide one corner of the frame assembly. In known manner, the first and second frame members are connected to extend normally to each other, and there would be other frame members similarly connected to complete the door frame. For clarity, only portions of the first and second frame members are depicted in the drawings.
The first and second frame members 1,2 each have a uniform section and in known manner are preferably extrusions of aluminium alloy which are cut to the required lengths to suit the frame dimensions. The frame members may be plastic coated.
The first frame member 1 is of hollow profile having an outer side wall 3, front and rear walls 4,5 (respectively), and an inner side Wall 6 from which opposed flanges 7,8 extend contiguously with the respective front and rear walls to define a channel 9 extending lengthwise of the inner side of the frame member X. The hollow interior of the first member provides a space or void in which a lock, fastener or other fitting may be mounted or supported as required. In the assembled frame, those portions of the channel 9 which are not enclosed provide a rebate or groove for receiving the marginal edge of glazing or a panel (not shown) or can receive a glazing gasket. 7 The second frame member 2 is also of hollow profile having an outer side wall 10, an inner side wall 11, front and rear walls 12,13 (respectively) with two opposed flanges 14,15 extending contiguously from 5 the respective front and rear walls to define a channel 16 extending lengthwise of the inner side of the frame member 2 in a similar manner and for the same purpose as described above with reference to the first frame member 1.
X0 The inner faces of the front and rear walls 12,13 of the second frame element are each formed with two ribs 17,18 and 19,20 respectively with the ribs 17 and 19 being opposed and lying adjacent to the inner side wall 11, and with the ribs 18 and 20 also being 15 opposed and lying adjacent to the outer side wall 10. These ribs provide two pairs of opposed grooves extending lengthwise and inside the hollow section of the second frame member.
Each pair of grooves is arranged to slidably 20 locate one of two similar joint blocks 21 within the interior of the second frame member.
Each joint block 21 comprises a rigid body 22 having a pair of opposed flanges 23 extending lengthwise of the body and arranged for sliding 25 engagement in the respective pairs of grooves so that a joint block can be inserted in the open end of the second frame member and located adjacent the respective one of the inner or outer side walls.
Each joint block 21 has a first threaded bore 24 30 extending lengthwise and substantially centrally of the body so that when the joint block is located in the second frame member each bore 24 opens to the end face of the second frame member. Additionally, each joint block has a second threaded bore 25 extending 8 transversely to the first bore 24 and each second bore opens to the face of the block which lies adjacent to the respective one of the inner or outer side walls 10,11 of the second frame member when the joint block is located therein.
The second threaded bores 25 in each joint block are for securing the joint block within and to the second frame member at a position so that a portion of the joint block projects from the end face of the second frame member. Each joint block is so secured by a respective threaded stud 26 which extends through a respective piercing in the inner and outer side walls of the second frame member.
As will be understood, each joint block is adapted to be slid into the second frame member until the second threaded bore is in register with the respective piercing, and then the block is secured by the associated stud and is fixed in the required position. When the two joint blocks are so secured, they provide two rigid reinforcements in the end of the second member at spaced apart positions and provide two spaced apart threaded bores extending accurately lengthwise of the second frame member.
Instead of the studs 26, rivets could be used to secure the joint blocks in the desired position, or in certain applications the joints blocks could be secured by crimping or spot welding.
The first frame member 1 is provided with two clearance holes 27 in the outer side wall 3 and two holes 28 in the inner side wall 6 which forms the base of the channel 9. The holes 27 and 28 are aligned with each other and are spaced apart lengthwise of the first frame member by the same distance as between the threaded bores 24 of the two joint blocks 21. ο A support plate 29 is provided to be mounted internally of the first frame member and this has two clearance holes 30 for aligned registration with the holes 27 and 28 aforementioned. The support plate 29 5 can be inserted through the open end of the first frame member.
Two threaded bolts 31 with recess drive heads 32 and respective spring washers 33 are provided to complete the component parts of the joint assembly.
The clearance holes 27 have a diameter larger than the bolt heads 32.
As shown in Figure 2, in the assembled joint the projecting end portions of the joint blocks are entered into the channel 9 of the first frame member with the 15 respective threaded bores 24 of the joint blocks being aligned with the holes in the inner side wall 6 of the first frame member. The end face of the second frame member abuts the faces of the flanges 7,8 where these meet and the engagement of the ends of the joint blocks 20 within the channel 9 accurately locates and supports the second frame member relative to the first frame member to prevent relative twisting whilst reinforcing the two frame members at the vulnerable corner location.
To connect the two frame members together, the two threaded bolts 31 are pushed through the outer clearance holes 27 and after the washers 33 have been pushed onto the bolt shanks, the shanks are pushed through the respective holes 30 in the support plate 29 30 and the inner side wall 6. The bolts 31 are then aligned with and engaged in the threaded bores 24 of the joint blocks and are tightened up to complete the rigid joint connection.
The assembled joint is simple to complete and is very strong. 15 In this exemplary embodiment, the joint blocks are slidably located in the second frame member by means of the complementary formations provided by the block flanges received within the grooves defined by the ribs. However, other forms of complementary formations can be employed. For instance, the joint blocks could be provided with lengthwise grooves or ribs for interengagement with complementary ribs and grooves formed in the second frame member. A series of splines on the side of the joint blocks for inter-engagement with similar splines on the opposed walls of the second frame member could be employed. Alternatively, the ioint blocks could be located for sliding movement by means of internal partitions or webs extending transversely across the hollow interior of the second frame member.
The precise configurations of these complementary formations may be selected to suit the profile of the second frame member for any particular door or window system without departing from the principle of this invention and taking the advantage of formations which can be produced in the uniform section of an extrusion.
Conveniently, the joint blocks themselves may be provided by parting off lengths of an extruded section.
Although this invention has been described with reference to a corner joint of a door frame, the principle of the joint assembly can be applied to other join)s required to assemble a door or window frame, for instance for the top or centre rail of a door or window frame. ' 11 The invented joint can be applied to any length of frame member required to be connected to another frame member extending normally thereto. Accordingly, the invented joint could also be applied for the inter-5 connection of mullion members.
