Description
SPECIFICATION
Transom window or transom door
The invention relates to transom windows and
transom doors, wherein frame profiles and
transom profiles thereof are manufactured
from plastics as tubular extrusions and
wherein the frame profiles have an abutment
web at one longitudinal edge provided with
an anchoring groove, to receive a sealing
strip, and an anchoring groove, to receive a
glazing strip, at an opposite longitudinal edge.
Plastics transom windows or doors of the
above detailed kind have been previously pro
posed, where the transom profiles are welded to the frame profiles. For this purpose the frame profiles have to be notched and the ends of the transom profiles to be fitted to the frame profiles prepared for welding.
According to the invention there is provided
a transom window or transom door, wherein frame profiles and transom profiles of the window or door are manufactured from plastics as tubular extrusions, the frame profiles
each have an abutment web at one longitudi
nal edge with an anchoring groove therein to receive a sealing strip and an anchoring groove for a glazing strip at an opposite
longitudinal edge and connectors are provided to secure ends of the transom profiles to the frame profiles in a T-connection, the connectors being equipped with locking tabs for engaging in the two anchoring grooves of the frame profiles, with a base plate which can be screwed onto a rabbeted base of the frame profiles, and with a bracket which can engage in the main bore of the transom profile and be secured therein.
In use the connector is first engaged with the frame profile and its position, if necessary, is adjusted, the final fixing of the connector to the frame profile and of the transom profile to the connector taking place subsequently.
To join a transom profile to a frame profile, the transom profile only has to be cut away in the region of the abutment web of the frame profile. The main bore of the transom profile, facing towards the rabbeted base of the frame profile, is closed by the base plate of the connector. In an advantageous embodiment, the connector projects externally beyond the bracket, which is in the form of a rectangular hollow body, by the thickness of the walls of the transam profile bounding the main chamber of that profile. The rectangular hollow body, corresponding to the inner contour of the main bore of the transom profile, extends into the main bore and is joined to the transom profile by an adhesive or by screws or both. The gaps still left in the rabbeted base of the frame profile can be made tight by simply sealing with a small quantity of jointing material, thus providing a liquid tight join between the transom and the frame profile.
The invention is diagrammatically illustrated
by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a frame
profile, a connector located on the frame
profile and a transom profile of a transom window or transom door according to the
invention; and
Figure 2 is a view taken in the direction of arrow II of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings a plastics frame profile 1 of a transom window or transom door is formed as a plastics extrusion with a bore 2 with a reinforcing tube 3 engaged therein. The frame profile 1 includes an abut
ment web 4, provided with an anchoring groove 5 to receive a sealing strip which bears against the edge of a glass pane. An anchoring groove 7 to receive a glazing strip is provided at a rabbeted base 6 of the frame profile and bounded by a C-shape. The groove 7 is defined by an inner angular edge strip 8 and an outer angular edge strip 9 forming the longitudinal edge of the frame profile.
A connector 11 is provided to join a transom profile 10 to the frame profile 1 in a Tconnection and can be located on the frame profile 1 by means of locking tabs 12 and 13.
The locking tab 12 is integral with a base plate 14. Instead of the tab 12 extending over the whole width of the base plate 14, a row of locking tabs could alternatively be provided. The height of the base plate 14 corresponds to that of the inner edge strip 8. To enable part of the base plate to be inserted in the anchoring groove 7, the base plate has a groove 15 extending for its full width to receive part of the inner edge strip 8.
At the side facing towards the abutment web 4, a bracket 16 integral with the base plate is provided with the locking tab 13 which engages in the anchoring groove 5. To mount the connector 11 the locking tab 12 is first placed in the anchoring groove 7 and engages beneath the edge strip 9. The connector 11 is then moved into the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position the tab 13 is engaged in the anchoring groove 5. The connector 11 is thereby located relative to the frame profile 1. Displacement of the connector longitudinally of the frame profile 1 is however still possible. As soon as the desired position of the connector relative to the frame profile has been established, the base plate 14 is fixed to the base 6 by means of fastening screws 17, the threaded shanks of the screws 17 being driven through the base 6 into the wall of the reinforcing tube 3.
In the example illustrated the bracket 16 is in the form of a rectangular hollow body, the external contour of which corresponds to the internal contour of a main bore 18 of the extruded transom profile 10. The transom profile 10 is cut away to form a rectangular recess 19 in the region of the abutment web 4, and its end portion is engaged over the rectangular hollow body of the connector 11.
The walls of the transom profile bounding the main bore 18 have their end surfaces bearing against the base plate 14. The base plate 14 projects outwardly beyond the square hollow member 16 by the thickness of the said walls.
The transom profile may be fixed to the rectangular hollow body 16 by an adhesive. A screw join is however alternatively or additionally possible, the transom profile 10 being secured to the hollow body 16 with fastening screws 20.
The bracket 16 in the form of a square hollow body is preferably made from plastics integrally with the base plate 14 and the locking tabs 12 and 13. the tabs 13 shown have a wedge shaped cross section and extend the full width of the bracket 16.
