Abstract

1458069 Polyurethanes GENERAL MILLS CHEMICALS Inc 16 April 1974 [16 April 1973] 16596/74 Heading C3R [Also in Division B2] Polyurethanes are prepared by chain extending a prepolymer having terminal isocyanate groups and being derived from a hydroxylic component comprising at least 20 equivalent per cent of a hydroxy terminated ester of a polymeric fat acid which comprises at least 80% dimeric fat acid as determined by gas-liquid chromatography with a diamine or a diol. The polymeric fat acid may be obtained by polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having 16 to 22, preferably 18 carbon atoms. Such polymeric fat acids may be reacted with glycols containing 2 to 10 carbon atoms to provide esters which are monomeric or polymeric in nature. The esters, optionally in admixture with aliphatic diols, polyethers, polyesterethers or polyesters, are then reacted with an organic polyisocyanate to form a prepolymer which is subsequently chain extended with the diol or diamine. The chain extension reaction may be carried out in solution in an organic solvent. Glass containers may have their exterior surfaces coated with the chain extended prepolymers (see Divisions B1/B2).
