Abstract

1487563 Polyurethane varnishes VEBACHEMIE AG 17 Sept 1974 [18 Sept 1973] 40494/74 Heading C3R Polyurethane varnishes comprise, dissolved in a solvent having a b.p. of at least 110‹ C., (a) 50 to 90% by weight of a hydroxyl groupcontaining polyester which has a hydroxyl number of 50 to 150 and which is formed from (i) a diol and/or a polyol and (ii) an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and, optionally, an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acid, the molar ratio of the aromatic to aliphatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acids being greater than 4 : 1 and (b) 10 to 50% by weight of an adduct of isophorone diisocyanate and #-caprolactam, at least 95% by weight of the isocyanate groups of the diisocyanate being blocked by the lactam. In a typical example, a polyester prepared by reacting terephthalic acid dimethylester, a 2,2,4- and 2,4,4 - trimethylhexanediol - 1,6 - isomer mixture and trimethylolpropane is mixed with the blocked adduct in a solvent comprising a commercial aromatic mixture and ethylglycol acetate. The varnishes are particularly suitable for the coating of metallic surfaces.
