Abstract

1442569 Aqueous polyurethane emulsions HODOGAYA CHEMICAL CO Ltd 24 Oct 1974 46112/74 Heading C3R An aq. polyurethane emulsion is made by dispersing in an aq. alkaline solution a carboxylmodified isocyanate prepolymer (P), having a COOH and #2 NCO groups, made by (1) reacting a polyol with a dicarboxylic acid anhydride to form a semi-ester (E), and (2) reacting (E) with a polyisocyanate (I). Reaction (1) may be performed at 60-130‹ C., there being no reaction between OH groups and COOH groups liberated by alcoholysis of the anhydride. Reaction (2) may be performed at 70-100‹ C. NCO/OH mole ratio may be #2À0, and in (P), COOH content may be 0À1-3À0%. (P) may either be preformed or be formed in situ by dispersing (E) and (I), consecutively or as a mixture, in the alkaline solution. The alkali may be inorganic or organic. Polyisocyanate (I) may be monomeric, or may be a prepolymer formed from a polyol and a monomeric polyisocyanate. In the examples, acid anhydrides are maleic, glutaric, succinic, or phthalic; polyols are polypropylenepolyether triol or glycol, polyethylene polyether triol, glycerol, castor oil, or trimethylolpropane; monomeric polyisocyanates are TDI, HMDI, or PPI. Mixtures of 2 semi-esters or of 2 polyisocyanates may be employed. The alkali may be NaOH or NH 4 OH. Use.-Paints or coatings for cloth, paper, leather, wood, or metal; impregnants, binders, adhesives, tackifiers.
