Abstract

1392188 Method of making iron electrode INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd 21 June 1972 [21 June 1971 10 March 1972] 28977/71 and 11360/72 Heading H1B [Also in Division C7] For producing iron electrodes of Ni-Fe storage batteries, negative iron active mass consisting of iron and oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) or hydroxide is electrodeposited on a conducting support, e.g. a foil of Ni, Fe, Cu or Ni-Fe alloy, from an electrolyte containing ferrous and ammonium ions, e.g. ferrous ammonium sulphate or sulphamate, and a buffering agent, e.g. alkali metal (Na) H 2 PO 4 , tartrate or lactate (added as such or as acid and alkali), at pH 2À5 to 5À5 and cathode C.D. up to 140 mA./cm.<SP>2</SP> 0À1 to 1À0% sulphur as S or FeS may be introduced into the deposit by including in the electrolyte sodium metabisulphite or thiosulphate or thiourea, using sodium sulphite/sulphurous acid buffer solution, or initially charging in a solution containing KOH, LiOH and an alkali metal (poly)sulphide. Cu amounting to from 1 to 20% of the Fe may enter the deposit by including a copper salt, e.g. CuSO 4 in the electrolyte. The active mass may be continuouly removed from the support as it is formed by using a rotary drum cathode and scraper, when required for ramming into tubes or pockets as current conductors.
