1367257 Finishing fabric H-U SOHR 22 March 1972 [22 March 1971] 13473/72 Headings D1F and D1S [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for heat treating elongate flexible elements, e.g. fabric, yarn, cord, rope, tape or sheet material, comprises a vessel 10 adapted to be filled with a heated fluid and having an open-ended duct 12 passing therethrough, the duct being located in the vessel such that the periphery of the duct over a major portion of the length thereof lies below the level to which the vessel is adapted to be filled and the open ends are isolated from the fluidbearing volume of the vessel, the duct having at least one internal surface curved in the longitudinal direction of the duct. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the material 22 to be treated passes, in contact with a partcylindrical wall 20, through a rectangularsection duct 12. Liquid 14 is continuously circulated through the vessel 10 and is heated externally to the desired treatment temperature of the material 22. The ends of the duct 12 may terminate at the outer wall of the vessel, as shown, or may project therebeyond. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, eight rectangular-section ducts are arranged two deep and four abreast. Material 22 may pass firstly through an upper duct 12.11 in which it is predried by conduction and radiation and then through a longer lower duct 12.12 for final drying. Four lengths of material 22 are treated simultaneously. In a modification (not shown), the duct has two spaced internal walls each having lateral corrugations and the construction is such that the material comes into contact with each wall alernately.
