1317090 Tetrahydroindane ketones F HOFFMAXN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 20 Dec 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 59018/71 Headings C2C and C2U The invention comprises compounds having the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a primary alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> each represent a hydrogen atom or together represent a carboncarbon bond, R<SP>3</SP> is a primary alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl group having 3 to 8 carbon atoms, R<SP>5</SP> is a hydrogen atom or, when R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> together are a carbon-carbon bond, R<SP>6</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> together form a carbon-carbon bond, R<SP>9</SP> is the group OR<SP>6</SP> or, when R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are a carbon-carbon bond, R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> together are a carbon-carbon bond, R<SP>6</SP> is hydrogen or an acyl or aroyl group, Z is a >C=O group or a group, R<SP>7</SP> is hydrogen or an acyl, alkyl, aralkyl or tetrahydropyran-2-yl group, R<SP>8</SP> is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbyl group and m is 1 or 2. They may be prepared by reacting a compound having the formula where R<SP>12</SP> is a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom or a hydroxy, alkoxy, hydrocarbylamino or dihydrocarbylamino group with a compound of the general formula and, if desired, converting the carbonyl group adjacent to R<SP>1</SP> in the reaction product of the formula into a group of the formula and/or, if desired, esterifying the hydroxy group of the compound to form a compound of the general formula where R<SP>6 1</SP> is an acyl or aroyl group, and/or, if desired, treating a compound of the general formula with strong acid to give a compound of the general formula and, if desired, catalytically hydrogenating the compound (1a<SP>1</SP>) with one mole equivalent of hydrogen to give a compound of the formula The compound (Ib) may be catalytically hydrogenated to give The compound (Ia<SP>1</SP>) may be further catalytically hydrogenated with two mole equivalents of hydrogen to give The compound (Ib) may be further catalytically hydrogenated with two mole equivalents of hydrogen to give (XI). The compound (Ic<SP>1</SP>) may be reacted with a strong acid to give a steroid having the general formula such as dl-equilenin methyl ether. Also, in one example racemic 4-[2-(3-methoxyphenyl) - ethyl] - 7α# - methyl - perhydroindane- 1,5-dione is cyclized to give a mixture of racemic 9(11)-dehydroestrone methyl ether and racemic 14#-8(9) - dehydroestrone methyl ether. In another example d-(+)-3-methoxy-estra- 1,3,5(10),9(11) - tetraen - 17 - one is prepared similarly from optically active starting material.
