Abstract

1338140 Abrading bodies DE BEERS INDUSTRIAL DIAMOND DIVISION Ltd 25 June 1971 [25 June 1970] 29943/71 Heading B3D [Also in Division C7] A hard wearing surface is produced by closely packing a layer of substantially spherical abrasive particles, e.g. of diamond, bonding the particles by means of a matrix preferably of metal, e.g. Cu/Zn or nickel, and removing surface material, preferably by grinding, until truncated surfaces of the particles are exposed. Particles preferably of two size grades may be placed in a mould, bonding being effected by adding a metal powder and fusing it under heat and pressure, or by electrodeposition of metal around the particles, and an adhesive may be applied to the mould to hold the particles before bonding. The surface may then be ground or spark eroded. For circular surfaces, diamond grit may be fed into a centrifugal mould formed by a rotating disc (5), Fig. 4 (not shown), having a flange (6) and cover ring (7), the disc preferably being adhesive coated, and a bonding resin may be fed in and set while rotation continues. Dividers may be fitted on the flange (6) for producing segmental surfaces. [GB1338140A]
