1334076 Foamed alkali metal silicates SOUTHWEST RESEARCH INSTITUTE 21 Oct 1970 [21 Oct 1969] 49893/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] A process for making a foamed product comprises (a) mixing a surface tension depressant with an aqueous solution of sodium and/or potassium silicate, (b) frothing the mixture from (a) into a foam and (c) forming a silicon dioxide polymer in the foam by reacting the sodium and/or potassium silicate with a silicon dioxide polymer forming agent which is either included in the mixture before step (a) or is introduced into the foam formed by step (b) and is selected from sodium fluorosilicate, potassium fluorosilicate, potassium fluoroborate, polyvalent metal salts of weak acids (e.g. calcium fluorosilicate, fluoroborate or fluorotitanate or magnesium phosphate) inorganic double salts (e.g. sodium calcium borate or lithium calcium borate) or mixtures thereof in an amount sufficient to make the foam rigid and resistant to being dissolved by water. Fillers and an agent (e.g. triacetin) for causing the sodium or potassium silicate to gel may be included in the mixture. The process may be continuous and may be performed in a pressure vessel.
