Abstract
999,408. Drafting rollers. SKF KUGELLAGERFABRIKEN G.m.b.H. Jan. 31, 1964 [Feb. 2, 1963 (2)], No. 4322/64. Heading D1D. [Also in Division F2] A drafting-roller comprises a non-rotating axle 1, a body comprising a hollow bushing 5 covered with resilient material 7, a bearing 3 supporting the roller on the axle and including rolling elements on an inner track 2 formed directly on the axle and an outer track within the bushing, and a sealing element 9 between the axle and the bushing at least on one side of the bearing. The sealing element rotates with the bushing, and is free for radial movement, and there may be a closure 8 for the end of the bushing. In Fig. 1, the bushing is internally stepped to provide bores 5<SP>1</SP>5<SP>11</SP> and a shoulder 14, and a track on a reduced end of the axle is provided for the bearing which comprises balls 3 and a cage 4. The sealing element 9 is a tight fit on the axle, but is free for limited radial movement. relatively to the bushing. To this end, the bushing and element are interconnected by a split ring 10 disposed in annular grooves 11, 12 in the bushing and the element, the groove 12 being deep enough to allow a certain amount of play, and the ring having a recess at its split to receive a lug in the element. A flange 13 on the element co-operates with the bore 5<SP>1</SP> to seal off the bearing: below it is an annular channel 16 for collecting dirt or expelled lubricant. The closure 8 is formed as a plug with recesses 8<SP>1</SP> forming a handle, and is retained by a bead engaging a groove in the part 5<SP>1</SP>. In other forms, the plug 8 is formed without a handle, the flange 13 co-operates with the shoulder 14 and may have radial projections to improve the sealing- effect, the inner end of the element 9 has a rearwardly-projecting flange with an inclined face to displace fibres that may accumulate in the bore 5<SP>11</SP>, while the rollers 3 are replaced by two rows of needle-bearings. In Fig. 6, the flange 13 has lips 13a and an additional ring 38 is provided, while the plug 8 is adapted to lubricate the bearing. To this end, the plug is extended at 30 with a chamfered edge to form, with a chamfered disc 34, an outlet to the bearing from a space between the disc and a spring-urged piston 32. As lubricant escapes from this space, the piston automatically moves to the right.
