Abstract

<PICT:0999377/C6-C7/1> Forgings and castings are cooled by passage through a rotatable drum in which they contact a coolant flowing through the drum. As illustrated, the drum 2 is immersed in an oil bath 13 and charge is introduced into the drum from a slide 1 over a step-like track 14 in a funnel 5. Oil is circulated through slots 6 in the track 14 by a propeller 7 and leaves the drum through holes in its periphery or through holes in a sliding door 10 which closes the outlet end of the drum. The door is operated by a motor 17 and the drum is rotated by a motor 21 and chain 22. A fixed screen 9 covers that part of the drum periphery which is not in contact with the charge during rotation. After cooling, the drum 2 is tilted by a hydraulic jack 23 acting on a drum supporting frame 3, the door 10 is lifted and the charge passes via a shoot 11 on to a conveyer 12. In modifications (not shown) the drum may be tilted manually or by a motor, the holes in the drum periphery may be omitted or provided only at its largest diameter, and the holes in the door 10 and in the drum and the slots 6 in the track 14 may be of variable cross-section. Articles may pass through the drum continuously in which case the drum is not tilted and the door 10 is omitted. Guide blades may be incorporated inside the drum, the temperature of the coolant may be controlled, the drum may be arranged to be readily inserted into and removed from the bath for repair work and the drum may be cylindrical or frusto-conical as illustrated.
