Abstract

1278795 Continuous casting OLIN CORP 21 July 1969 [17 Oct 1968] 36634/69 Heading B3F A continuous casting machine has a melt holder 10 with a feed nozzle 40, a support 30 for the feed nozzle, an opening for carrying lubricant 402 in the feed nozzle, a mould assembly 20, 51, 58, 103 rotatable about the feed nozzle 40, means for moving the mould assembly back and forth upon the feed nozzle, a mould cooler 601 and a casting withdrawal apparatus (see Fig. 9). Aluminium alloy from the melt holder passes through the nozzle into the mould 20, which at commencement of casting is only of a short length. As the casting proceeds the mould assembly is moved to the right of Fig. 1 by cam rollers 56 to give a longer mould. During the casting operation the mould assembly is continually rotated by a driven belt 59 engaging the mould assembly pulley wheel 58. The mould is cooled by a water sheet emanating from a chamber 604 and flowing from a surface 608 along the curved external surface of the mould. The cooler 601 does not rotate with the mould. The mould 20 (Fig. 7) is provided at its exit end with a number of helical grooves (202) which help to spread lubricant over the cast billet's surface. Lubricant is fed into the mould through the nozzle through a capillary 402, Fig. 4, entering a reservoir 407. An 0-ring 405 stops the lubricant flowing back over the nozzle surface so that the lubricant has to penetrate a flock or fibre barrier F to reach the molten metal. The rotating mould ensures that the lubricant flows evenly over the surface of the cast billet. Coolant is removed from the cast billet by wipers 711, Fig. 1, and finally by an air blower 720. Secondary billet cooling is provided by a water spray 731. The casting withdrawal apparatus 900 comprises a rotating chain of trolleys 930 driven by a sprocket and chain 915, 916 from a motor 910. Rolls 951, 952 press down upon the billet. The motor also drives a shaft S which rotates the mould through a belt and pulley system (not shown).
