Abstract
660,692. Making wire; continuous casting-machines; rolling. PROPERZI, I. March 8, 1949 [April 30, 1948; Oct. 19, 1948], Nos. 6282/49 and 6283/49. Classes 83 (i), 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Moulds; heating by electricity.-Wire is made by continuously casting a bar and immediately rolling this down, the successive diminishing sections differing in shape. The device comprises a grooved rotating drum 1, a belt 4 engaging the drum periphery over part only of its surface, a nozzle 20 supplying molten metal to the groove where it meets the belt, a rolling mill train and means to guide the bar 32 to said mill train. Metal in a lowfrequency induction furnace 60, Fig. 8, of known type, e.g. with twin windings and melting channels 61, 62, 63, is fed through a heated pipe 65 to a heated trough 18 and thence to the nozzle 20. The belt is kept in contact with the drum by passing over a wheel 5 on an arm 7 pivoted at 8. The bar 32 is stripped from the drum by a wedge 33 and directed into the first pass between three rolls 68, Fig. 8, by a guide 67. The work then passes through a series of tripple rolls 69, 71, &c. driven at speeds corresponding to the elongation of the work. The rolls of successive passes are displaced angularly 60 degrees and the passes may be alternately circular and triangular as shown in Fig. 4. Electric or other heaters 22, 66 and 73 may be provided. The drum 1 has a passage 29, Fig. 1, for cooling water circulated via hollow spokes 27, 28, 30, 31, and passages, not shown, in the hub.
