The output windings of an A.G. generator are arranged on a core which has an air gap accommodating coreless field coils, the core and field coils being arranged to have relative movement. In a reciprocating form, Fig. 1, the field coil 43 which is fed through flexible leads 47, is reciprocated between the poles of stator cores 41 by electromagnet 44. This produces an output from stator coils 42. In the rotary form shown in Fig. 2, the cores 5, 6, e.g. of steel or ferrite, carry axially directed poles 7, in the air-gap between which lie the stationary cores field cores 17 carried in a non- conducting plate 14. There are twice as many field-coils as rotor poles. The output from rotor winding 18 is transmitted through a rotary transformer having primary and secondary windings 19, 22 situated in rotating and fixed pot-shaped cores 20, 21 respectively. The winding 18 may be on the central core as shown, or on each pole 7. The field member may rotate. Two such machines may be used in cascade, the rectified output of one machine serving to excite the next. The machine may be of radial type. The windings may be superconducting. The machine may be excited with A.C. or D.C.
