Abstract

998, 533. Thermographically imaging lithographic plates. COLUMBIA RIBBON & CARBON MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. Feb. 8, 1962 [Feb. 13, 1961], No. 4858/62. Heading G2C. The working surface of a lithographic plate 30 is imaged with oleophilic material by contacting it with a donor sheet 10 which is translucent to infra-red and provided on the contacting surface with an imagewise distribution 11a of infra-red absorbing oleophilic material, directing a sufficient quantity of radiation rich in infra-red against the donor sheet to melt the imaging composition and cause it to adhere to the working surface of the plate, and finally separating the plate and donor sheet. The donor sheet may be imaged by pressure transfer, as by means of a typewriter, from the transfer layer of a transfer sheet. The transfer material of the imaging transfer layer preferably has a melting range over several degrees F.within the temperature range of 100‹ to 250‹F. and may comprise a mixture of natural or artificial waxes together with polyisobutylene or chlorinated rubber and a vegetable or mineral oil and optionally lanolin, and nigrosine with or without carbon black. The donor sheet 10 may be of paper or regenerated cellulose or polyethylene terephthalate film; the radiation source may be an infra-red lamp, a carbon arc, or a photographic flash lamp; and the hydrosphilic working surface of the lithographic plate may be produced from carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium alginale, gelatin, or zein.
