Abstract

The invention comprises bis-(hydroxyethyl)-amines of the formula <FORM:0998510/C2/1> wherein R is an unsubstituted aralkyl group of at least 9 carbon atoms, or an aralkyl group the aromatic radical of which is substituted by one or more halogen atoms or alkoxy radicals and acid addition salts thereof, and the preparation of compounds of the above formula wherein R is an aralkyl group (without limitation) or a halo- and/or alkoxy-substituted aralkyl group by reacting an amine RNH2, or an acid addition salt thereof, with ethylene oxide and, if desired, converting the product into its acid addition salt. Preferably the amine is reacted with 2-4 moles of ethylene oxide, in an organic solvent such as methanol or ethanol. Products wherein R is a phenylethyl, p-chlorobenzyl, p-bromobenzyl, phenylisopropyl and 3,4-dimethoxyphenylethyl group, are described.
