998,398. Root-crop harvesters. A. C. NICOLL. June 29, 1964 [Nov. 1, 1963], No. 43142/63. Heading A1F. A potato-harvester is of the type comprising a lifting unit (not shown) for lifting the potato-ridges on to a conveyer (not shown) which deposits the excavated material on to a sorting unit 10 which includes a rotary table 11 from which potatoes are hand-picked by operatives and transferred to a lower table which delivers them to a collecting point. According to the invention a brush 12 is provided having flexible bristles 13 rotating about a fixed axis 14 in a direction contrary to the direction of rotation of the table in order to impede the passage of potatoes while permitting the passage of stones thereunder. The brush has nylon bristles and is driven by a belt 16 from a pulley 17 connected to the ground wheels of the machine. The operatives stand on platforms (not shown) surrounding the unit 10. A second brush may be provided to effect a further separation.
