Abstract

998,392. Two-part couplings. O. PELL CONTROL Ltd. June 29, 1964 [July 1, 1963], No. 25986/63. Heading H2E. The female half of a multiple-contact electrical connector comprises a body 2, moulded from an insulating synthetic material and housing spring strip metal contacts 10 in bores 4, and a relatively thin cover-plate 14 of synthetic material which is secured to the body 2 by projections 8 formed on the body, the projections passing through corresponding holes 18 in the plate and being subsequently heat-softened and formed into rivet heads as at 8A. The plate 14 retains the contacts 10 within the bores 4 and has apertures 16 which guide the entry of inserted male contacts, the connector being polarized by an asymmetrical arrangement of the contacts 10 within the body 2. An electrical terminal portion 13 of each contact 10 protrudes from the body 2 through a narrow section 4A of the bore 4 and may be twisted to additionally secure the contact within the body 2. In a modification (Figs. 3, 4, not shown), the portion 13 is formed as a tubular pin for connection in a socket in a printed circuit board, and has a resilient barb 24 struck out from the pin for engaging the surface of the body 2 to additionally secure the contact within the body.
