A gymnastic mat 10 is composed of rectangular sections 11 of foamed polyethylene or rubber inside top and bottom covers 13, 15 of canvas coated with a polyvinyl resin, the covers 13, 15 being sewn together along the bottom cover so that the mat may be folded. The mats may have fastening elements to join a number of mat together.
