997,989. Grinding. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. June 24, 1964 [June 27, 1963], No. 26112/64. Heading B3D. A device for grinding knives, scissors and similar tools comprises a grinding disc 9 mounted in a wall of a housing 1, the wall having a surface 2 for supporting one type of tool to be ground, a motor in the housing for driving the grinding disc, and a guide member 4 arranged adjacent the wall of the housing and having a surface 5 which faces the guide surface 2 to form therewith a guide slot 7 for the said one type of tool to be ground, the member having a slot 20, the sides 18, 19 of which form further guide surfaces for supporting another type of tool to be ground. As described, the wall of the device is formed with two inclined surfaces 2, 3 for supporting tools to be ground, and the grinding disc 9 has its surface protruding slightly above the intersection of the surfaces; the grinding disc is mounted on a sleeve 11 resiliently urged upwardly by a spring 10, the sleeve being non-rotatably secured to the shaft of the motor which is controlled by a switch 29 in the back wall of the housing. The guide member 4 has a connecting piece 24 secured to the housing by a screw 26 and is formed with a pair of surfaces 5, 6 which face the guide surfaces 2, 3 and define therewith a pair of slots 7, 8 for guiding a tool, such as a knife, to be sharpened. The guide member also has a slot 20 having surfaces 18, 19 which serve for guiding a tool, such as the blade of a pair of scissors, to be sharpened. Surfaces 20, 22, 23 on the member 4 guide the tools so that they engage the periphery of the grinding disc. A leaf spring 31, 32 is provided in each slot 7, 8 and has projections 35 which engage and press the blade of a knife to be sharpened against the surfaces 2, 3 to assist in holding the blade in the correct position during sharpening. The leaf springs may be made from a single piece of material held between the members and housing 1 by a projection 38 on the member engaging a recess in the housing which is produced from several separate moulded components of a synthetic material.
