Abstract

1353312 Sharpening cutting edges BLACK & DECKER MFG CO 11 Jan 1973 [23 Feb 1972] 1558/73 Heading B3D A method of sharpening the cutting edges of a cutting blade assembly having a pair of relatively movable toothed cutting blades comprises positioning an abrasive sharpening device adjacent the assembly in abrasive rubbing contact with the cutting edges of one blade of the assembly and moving said one blade relative to the device and the other blade. The method may be applied to the sharpening of a grass trimmer 11 having a housing 13 secured to a fixed blade 24 and a motor for oscillating a movable blade 25 about a pivot 29. The sharpening device consists of a plastics body 41 having a recess 43 for receiving the fixed blade which is releasably secured to the body by overhanging lips 45, ... 48. Abrasive stones 51 are secured by adhesive in depressions in the recess and receive the teeth of the fixed blade therebetween. The stones engage the movable blade to sharpen the teeth thereof as it is oscillated by the motor. In another embodiment for sharpening the teeth 107, Fig. 7, of the movable blade 103 of a hedge trimmer, the stones 115 are carried by a resilient holder 113 which releasably grips the underside of stationary blade 101 and the top of a blade cover-plate 109. The stones fit between adjacent teeth 105 of the stationary blade for rubbing contact with the teeth 107 of the movable blade.
