Abstract

997,937. Hinges. O. C. GESSLER. Dec. 17, 1962, No. 47484/62. Heading E2F. A hinge for the lid of a luggage or other compartment in a motor vehicle comprises a mounting plate 12 adapted to be secured to the vehicle body, a spring retaining and supporting cup 20 pivotally mounted on the plate 12 and having a cylindrical peripheral portion 22 with a spring retaining edge flange 24, a hinge arm 26 extending from the flange and having a lid-mounting flange 28, and a helical torsion spring 18 encircling the peripheral portion 22 with its ends anchored to the mounting plate and to the cup. The flange 24 may be arcuate, as shown, so that the end of the spring can be hooked against one end, or it may be annular, and a stop 40 is provided to arrest the opening movement of the hinge arm. The spring may be of sufficient strength to commence the opening of the lid upon release of the lid fastening means.
